I agree that he really started to look the business at the end of the season, so I do have high hopes for him. I'm also hopeful that Gyan starts to show his Ghana form for us which would also endear him to the fans.

Welcome bonny lad, take your time settling in. <ok>

You and Gyan can share the goals in the 2-1 win against Liverpool.

Anything less than a hat trick against the skunks will be unacceptable mind.

Sunderland have completed the transfer of England Under 21 star Connor Wickham after the player passed a medical today.

The 18-year-old joins the Black Cats from Ipswich Town for an initial fee of £8million, but that could rise to £12 million with add-ons.

Wickham, a target for Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham, has signed a four-year contract at the club.

A statement on the club website read: "Steve Bruce has made England Under 21 international Connor Wickham his latest summer signing.

"The 6'3" 18-year-old - rated as one of the country's brightest talents - has moved from Ipswich Town for a fee of £8m, with the potential to rise to £12m over the course of the contract, depending on a number of factors."

Manager Steve Bruce said the Black Cats' supporters would look forward to seeing the youngster in action.

He said: "A number of top sides have been chasing Connor for some time now, so naturally we are absolutely delighted he has chosen to come to Sunderland.

"He's still very young, but at 6ft 3in he's a physical presence. With his height and style of play, he will offer us a threat in front of goal and complement our existing strikers.

"We have been watching him for a while now and he is improving and developing all the time. He's a great prospect and I'm sure our supporters will love watching him play."

Wickham was named the Football League Young Player of the Year last season.

i'll hold my hands up and say i got this one completely wrong. I honestly thought we didnt have a chance in hell of getting this lad. i guess i got swayed by all the press talk of him going to l/pool. Really, really happy with this signing and i hope this is a catalyst for getting another couple of high profile signings in. Maybe this might persuade N'zogbia that we mean business and are trying to build something special

bobgee- cheers pretty poor season missed out on the playoffs but will get there next year i hope!

Cestriamackem- Oh yeah :emoticon-0111-blush mum won't be pleased with that!
Plus yeah most of Gillingham is just full of scum like that but you know it's nice to let them out into the wild every know and then ;)

Also I to think Sessegnon will do really well for you. Seemed to be really well liked at PSG so hopefully he can do the job up in the north-east!

By the way do any of you know what has happened to Nyron Noseworthy? He left us for you and seemed to be a solid first teamer! What went so wrong that he was sent on loan to Sheffield United? Did he just not play well or something?

Aye, he will enjoy living in Newcastle.

Oh, and he also lost a derby 5-1 last year, perfect match.

In all seriousness, good signing, a big gamble but if it pays off then you're laughing.

Guys there was a previous thread mentioning the problems the guys has.
It asked to give some leeway, as Mick the admin is hoping the links to the news articles will improve the sites profile on Google. <ok>

Syd may have the link to the thread it was a sticky for a while.

Oh and the actual fans reactions to the news will improve how it comes across.

This is a HUGE coup. This guy has the potential to be 'world class' and he is a Sunderland player.
I can't remember when I was last so excited about a signing

Absolutely brilliant!!! Must admit that I was a bit worried that the the lad would choose the 'Pool. He's shown that he's got a sensible head on his young shoulders by choosing us. I too hope that by Christmas he's turned into a crowd idol, but agree that we shouldn't expect too much too soon and give the lad all the support we can.

    Liverpool fan in peace.

Congratulations! It seemed we were both in for him and you got him. I've seen bits and pieces of him and he looks like a crackin prospect. I honestly hope he does really well for you and can become a England regular in the process. I suspect he will get a good few goals for you. (Hopefully not against Liverpool though!)

    Good luck for next season.

Thanks Chris. As he is a great Liverpool fan I, like many others, thought we had very little chance of signing him but I guess he thought he had a better chance of getting into our starting XI than yours. Still we must be realistic and note he is only, at the moment, a great prospect and hope he reaches his true potential over the next few seasons. Thanks also for your kind words and may I wish you the best of luck for next season except, of course, for two certain league games.
