I'm getting the impression saints fans feel a bit fed up and tired of it all. Or is it just an august thing? I feel a bit dis - heartened to be honest. any suggestions? I am enjoying seeing utd fail badly though - that is funny. In fact that's cheered me up a bit. I think I'm going to get a nice fish pie for dinner. things are looking up.
I am having Jambalaya for my supper this evening. Its my favourite so I am very happy about that. As for football I had the heart and interest kicked out of me by events at the beginning of the summer and the world cup which I hardly watched at all. That is also probably reflected by how infrequently I post on here these days. I come looking for inspiration, get none so I go away. I was more interested when we were in Division 1 than I am now. Having said that I am warming to our new manager as he seems like an open honest sort of guy. I am hoping that by the time we get to the end of September my spirits would have been lifted but that will depend upon a couple for really top notch signings and some scintillating performances by the team. So I am feeling flat but I am giving Ron the benefit of the doubt and hoping that he can reinvigorate my love for Saints.
I am feeling as bored and uninterested in football as I can remember. I think it is the cold reality that we are "competing" in a league where the best we really can hope for is 8th, and we will finish somewhere between 8th and 17th each season and eventually will get relegated, just seems so pointless. Perhaps some of this new found disinterest stemmed from my belief that we were actually moving forwards up until this summer, and had the basis of a side that could potentially break that top 6/7 and then perhaps even push on further with a couple of signings. So it was a massive kick in the balls when the majority of our best players all left. Add in the fact that not one of the new signings excite me particularly and it all adds up to me not really giving a **** atm
The thing p***ing me off at the moment is all these transfer rumours How many players have we been linked with so far? Must be approaching 50 or more. The vast majority just build up expectation only to be dashed by headlines a couple of days later....ahhhhhhhh! Roll on next week when everyone will know what we have to play with
Oh come on, you can't list the brutal realities of the Premier League in your first paragraph and then make a big deal about not "breaking into the top 6/7" in the next paragraph. It wasn't a kick in the balls, it was reality, as listed in your first paragraph. I can understand fans not going for financial / personal / geographical reasons, but saying its because of the player sales etc is ****ing weak IMHO.
Yeah, anyone would think its players agents linking their players with Saints because they know we have money and its easy for the tabloids / internet sites / twitter to repeat to garner possibly interest in their clients. It's a completely new phenomena.
I feel quite good about things. The fire sale never happened. We got a good manager who I like. We bought Tadic and Forster who I think are awesome. We still have ambition. We are still vastly better than we were in the 90s (but no LeTiss to wow us...). I think my expectations never got as high as some. I still see mid table as a very good year - but I want cup runs, damnit! Can't wait to get beyond deadline day and on with the season!
Whilst I wasn't one of those fans who was expecting that it was just a matter of time before we were in the CL, I realise now that I did buy into a lot of the Cortese talk more than I thought. You are right about it being the reality, but I think I was living a bit in dreamland and thinking that we could push on and perhaps break the top 6/7. So it is more the fact that the reality has sunk in for me, leaving me feeling like it is massively pointless.
If you only entered the PL to win it, most teams are wasting their time. If you hope to get in the Europa, your chances improve a bit (but you still probably won't win it). My hopes are that we are a well run, profitable club playing good football...that is achievable (because we are there). Hope to get in the Europa in the next few years.
But that is what happened with the players. Cortese convinced them that we were going to be in the Champions' League...everything else was pointless. This was exacerbated by MP. So overnight they changed from a good bunch of lads playing for a club that some professed to love into typical greedy PL bastards with delusions of grandeur. As Les Reed said, they wanted to take the easy route to the CL. Saints still have ambition, but the players couldn't wait. As fans, we can't ditch the club for another, so we have to be patient.
Can understand that, but football has always been mostly pointless as 95% of clubs win & achieve nothing each season. The more focused you are on the actual football, the less interesting football is. It's the day out, being with mates, bit of old tribal gathering & having a sing song. That's how it should be (in my opinion) from the very top of the game to the very smallest part of it on a crap council pitch on a Sunday morning. It's why watching the game mostly on TV strips the soul not only out of the game, but out of the fan.
Again I agree with most of what you are saying, I just am feeling deflated by it all atm, I'm sure it will pass. I usually go into every season with a sense of hope/optimism of what Saints could achieve, and this hope was raised another level since ML bought the club and Cortese was spouting off about his dreams. But this transfer window has dashed any particular hope I had for this season as we have hit the glass ceiling of 8th, it really wont get any better than last year.
