I know I'm not the first person to say this, but seems people are forgetting that Rooney can play this role really well and better then most at doing so. In my opinion to get a decent CM its to expensive right now and it looks like we are not going to be getting one. It would probably be better and cheaper to get another decent striker right now so Rooney is allowed to stay back more.

    What do you lot think?

He is most effective when played just off the striker in the hole where he can link up midfield and attack. It would be foolish to change that. But hey that's just my opinion.

    Nani----Rooney----Anderson

    ------Hernandez----------

This would be my choice, with the 3 behind the striker interchanging positions. Two defensive midfielders behind them.

Not gonna happen now that England's Ashley Young has been signed. Him and Valencia will ensure that our style of play is much more orthodox.

I would like to see how this line-up gets on

    Valencia Andreson Rooney Young
    Nani
    Hernandez

This would leave great options from the bench to change the formation.

I do not think he would excel in this position and the best position as others on here have noted is just off the main striker.

I would like to see how this line-up performs

    Valencia----Anderson----Rooney----Young
    -------------Nani
    ------------------Hernandez

This would give some steel and creativaty to CM, great delivery and speed from the wings, unpredictability and speed in attack and good options from the bench to change the style of attack and midfield if things aren`t working

I very much doubt that Anderson will get a chance next season.

Sorry but that seems like a foolish idea, rooneys best position is just behind a striker linking with the midfield, (or mounting a 50 year old)

IMO that's the same thing as attacking mid. Especially if your wide players push up higher.

    depends on the formation.

In a bog standard 4-4-2 it's 'support striker'
    In a 4-2-3-1 it's attacking centre mid

Even though the distance behind the striker is identical.

I hope that he does, preferably further forward where his passing will be more accurate and incisive.
