Just went out on away goals against Lokeren. I imagine their fans must be pissed off at Brucey's team selection; six changes for a crucial match, in the club's first ever European season? I'm glad Gus takes the cup competitions seriously, you get more memories from a semi-final/final appearance than you do from a scrappy 1-0 in the league over a mid-table side after all...

Yeah, seems odd, given that Europa League winners get CL football.

That said, they would have had big troubles squad size wise had they qualified so may be a blessing in disguise.

Might be there only shot at Euro football though.

Like we had a ****ing chance <laugh>

We completely deserved to go out like.

I'm kinda half on half on this. I'm obviously upset with going out, but going out isn't the end of the World. We would very likely not get past the Groups.

Being in Europe would likely have meant we'd be 16th or below. Not being in it might let us finish higher in the league, which considering how much you get per place in the Prem, would very likely be better for the club financially and going forward.

That's true mate, I actually think they have a decent squad though, particularly with Dawson joining and especially if they get Abel Hernandez in. Seems a strange one, though Brucey tends to be one of those "Premiership survival or your money back" kind of managers, so it's not that surprising. I know they made the cup final last year but they had a fairly soft run in, all things considered. If we'd managed to win the cup and made it to Europe I'd definitely want us to have a bloody good go at it!

TBF mate, thats pretty much what we've been saying about hull in europe this year, probably a blessing in disguise, with a full on european campaign you would have really struggled most of us thought

I agree, but we have a few quid more behind us and a bigger ground, they have to be realistic.

Could be that Hernandez deal was hinging on them qualifying though, we'll see.

Hernandez has already agreed personal terms and passed a medical, we are just waiting for the work permit.

Yeah when you factor in that they'd only just been promoted the year before, perhaps a European campaign would have been a tough ask for a team that isn't fully established in the Premiership yet. It's interesting that Birmingham managed a solid run in Europe a few years ago when they were in the Championship, though they were nowhere near promotion that year.

Hopefully we'll be able to have this kind of debate about Sunderland sooner rather than later...

Top signing mate, rate the lad.

It's my dream mate, going to Spain, Italy or Germany to watch the lads in a competitive game.

I'd go to ****ing Ukraine, frankly.

I was ridiculed from their posters for saying the competition was a joke, some of them took it as a personal insult I think. This is the best thing that could have happened to Hull. They can concentrate on the domestic season now and stand a much better change of avoiding a relegation battle. It gives the a bit of leeway to go for another cup run too.

It's a shame their first venture into Europe was soiled by failing to reach the main part of the competition by a flawed format which favours the top clubs. If I were them I'd feel robbed by UEFA and their stupid competition streamlining, not robbed by Bruce's sensible team selection.

To be fair being runner up in a cup really shouldn't get you into Europe.

I hope you're right, with Poyet in charge we have as much a chance as any outside the top 7, as long as we can keep hold of him.

Agreed, it's also strange that the FA Cup runners up are awarded a place, but the League Cup runners up aren't. Mind you, you wouldn't expect anything UEFA does to make any sense.
