In my opinion the Club made the right decision to sell, both for club and player. There is no loyality in football any more, if Sam didn`t want to go he only had to say NO! but you can`t blame him for taking a pay rise and a huge signing on fee (possibly in the region of £200.000) we all would jump at the chance and his agent kept him well updated and encouraged him. From the clubs point of view we held out until a decent price ??? was on the table and avoided a Maynard type situation. We also brought in an able replacement and we hopefully have cash to spend to further strenthen the side. Remember when Goater left at the 11th hour with no time for a replacement! I believe this will be a positive outcome for both player and club. Hopefully we may bring in a forward and left wing back and be more of a threat going forward. Time will tell. It would be foolish to deny any player the chance to progress, perhaps different for a leading championship club, but we are where we are and the club may be forced to sell others in time if we are successful in this division. Thank god for SL, at least we are not like the Gas, Sell the best players, pocket the cash and end up in the Vanarama league.
Everything I've read in regards to fee was that we received just over a million for him. I'm okay with selling a player that wants out, but when we quote £5m and then sell for £1m, less than it cost to buy him, we make ourselves look weak. Additionally, I see few signs that indicate that we'll reinvest that money well. If he wasn't going to sign a new deal he should have gone, but I'm shocked that we didn't get more for him.
Of course the Club made the right decision, there was no other choice. Even the clowns that run us couldn't make the same 'Maynard mistake'. The half truths/ lies that came from Cotterill should open the eyes of happy clappers. Total Bullshi**er.
I imagine it was because he told the media that Agard was not a replacement for Baldock, and that Baldock was worth around £5m to us. Agard was a replacement, and we got nowhere near £5m. If we did Brighton would be touting a record transfer. Either Cotts lied, or the board sold Baldock on behalf of the manager. Either way, this wasn't a situation where the club would win.
'He handled it spot on ffs' - He didn't have any option. FFS. The bullshit came with all his comments saying Baldock wouldn't leave. Look back and have a laugh.
In saying he's worth £5m to us, that's clearly to try and get the best deal possible, and ultimately it's not going to be anywhere near that when his contract is up in a year and the bids are coming from a league above. Would you rather he say his value is £1.5m and he then gets sold for £750k? I don't think Agard ever was 100% a replacement, and Cotts clearly wanted Baldock to stay, but money talks and if Baldock decided that it was stupid to turn it down, then the club are powerless, plus the money could be well used to strengthen the squad in the final positions necessary. I'm pretty sure at no point did Cotts say "Baldock is 100% not leaving". I think he's been very shrewd in getting Agard in early. If Rotherham knew we were desperate then we would have paid a grossly inflated fee.
Last month Mr Cotteill said he was not interested in selling Sam Baldock, the club do not have to sell their BEST players, he is building a squad etc etc .. I tend to believe nothing Mr Cotterill says about anything. He is amusingly Mr Inconsistent.
But he wasn't going to say Baldock's off Redprint please don't beat me is he. Imagine if he said Agard is a replacement for Baldock and the deal falls through. **** sake man, cheer up the worlds still round and the sun will shine again.
None of that is a lie though! He didn't want to sell Baldock, and the club didn't have to sell. It clearly was all to get a better price but none of that is bull****.
Doing the opposite to what you have stated you will is bullshitting. Playing poker with words to get a better price is also bullshitting. It is amusing in a " Here he goes again way ..."
But at no point did he explicitly state, "we will not sell Baldock". Hence no bullshitting. I'd much rather our manager play poker with words than let Baldock go for free at the end of the year, after a non-promotion due to our lack of reinforcements in other areas (which we can now pay for).
Sorry he said he did not want to sell him, and it did not matter what the bid was, he is going nowhere, we are in a position not to sell our best players, we are building a squad and more. It was pure bulls**t. Funny, but bulls**t none the less.
Not sure he said he's going nowhere, but regardless, none of the rest is necessarily contradicted by selling Baldock. It is an argument of semantics but it is possible to sell Baldock and all the rest be true. He's simply being a football manager.
How do we know what the fee is? It is all rumour, innuendo, guesswork. Because published accounting methods have drastically altered since the AD days when fees were published in the annual accounts, it is unlikely that we will ever know!
HE IS GOING NOWHERE sez Steve âWeâre trying to put a squad together here and weâre simply not interested in selling him." What Brighton offered is immaterial because, at the end of the day, it was dismissed out of hand". We donât want to sell him, so it doesnât matter what the bid was. We are fortunate that we donât have to sell our best players and we have Steve Lansdown to thank for that." "Sam is our player and he is going nowhere.â âSam has told me he wants to stay and this whole issue is probably getting more time than it deserves.â "Whose that on the phone?" "Tell Sam to get down Temple Meads, he is going to Brighton, put the kettle on and lets have a brew."
People seem to picking on certain words said by SC and forgetting others. Didn't he also say he wanted the window closed as soon as possible and that may be a sting in the tail? Sounds like he always knew he may go even though he wanted him to stay. I don't have a problem with what he has been saying
exactly and remember sam said he was "happy to stay" thats not the same as wants to stay Onward and upward
From the original title of the post 'Club made the right decision ....' - it wasn't really a decision - more a 'no brainer'. Wind down a players contract and let him walk on a free, or get some money in for him whilst you still can and save on his wages? No contest really. He hasn't really lit up this seasons campaign either - perhaps his heart had already gone elsewhere? Or perhaps he was a 'one-season-wonder' and we had his season? Anyway, moving on......,.
