If loyalty plays no part on either club or players side and managers naturally pick who they want for their own teams.

Can someone please tell me how K Davis got a new 3 year contract while back? Cause the club legend and loyalty stuff does not wash with me in football. Your either good enough to play your position or your not and no one wants to see him take Forsters place if he had to injure himself.

Therefore if Cork is not rated, does not fit into managers plans then clearly he doesn't get new contract whatever we all think from club

I think it's obvious Kelvin is moving onto a coaching role and therefore has a long term future with the club.

Fair enough if that is case.

Just find it weird situation with some players compared to others. Especially the ones who have been around for years

You said yourself you don't buy the loyalty thing. Professional football is a ruthless business, players and managers come and go, only the fans stick around for life.

With any luck though, we might get some stability under Koeman. I'm happy for the club to back his judgement, and while I value the contributions of both Jack Cork and Artur Boruc, if they've slipped down the pecking order in the manager's eyes, so be it. They won't starve.

Which ones do you mean Laura? We don't have many players left in the first team squad who have been around for years. Of those that have, Morgan Schneiderlin and Jose Fonte are both good enough to play in the Premier League, as is Jack Cork, but if we could buy better replacements we would. Jos Hooiveld is the only other player apart from Kelvin Davis left from before we got to the Premier League and I would be very surprised if he played in the first team again.

One thing we can be sure of is that fans at the matches love him, which doesn't always seem to be the case on forums ...

We all like Cork. We just all have different opinions on him, that doesn't mean we won't cheer him when we are at a game.

I think that Cork is one of those players that you only see the best of in a match situation, some players may look great on the training pitch, but lack consistancy over a number of games.
JC is a solid premiership midfielder, not spectacular, not a world-beater, but solid.
I do find it hard to believe that we would not offer him a contract extension, but would spend £12,000,000 on Long (who IMO is a solid premiership striker, not spectacular, not a world-beater, but solid) I know they play in different positions, but if I had to rate them on their relative merits, I would say they are of a similar quality.
I do however accept that we have more quality options in midfield than we do up-front and that RK knows a shed-load more about than I do!

Jack Cork set for Palace as boss search reaches a conclusion
    Wednesday, 27 August 2014

    By Richard Cawley

SOUTHAMPTON midfielder Jack Cork is set to join Crystal Palace - once they end their managerial hunt.

The Eagles are understood to be down to two contenders for the Selhurst Park hotseat, their former boss Neil Warnock and Steve Clarke.

Both men have been interviewed about the vacant post and Palace are set to name Tony Pulis' successor imminently.

And Cork, 25, is set to be the first signing made as a deal for the Saints man is already at an advanced stage.

The midfielder, comfortable in a number of positions, scored for Southampton in their 2-0 win over Millwall in the Capital One Cup last night.

I don't believe Koeman would have played Cork yesterday if a deal was 'at an advanced atage'

It just doesn't make sense to play a player if he knows he's not part of his season's plans. Much better to give the chance to players who will play as it's another 45 minutes of gelling time. For that reason, I think Cork is staying.

I don't really know why there's a debate. Ideally, Saints want two quality players per position. In Jack Cork, Saints don't need that, as he can cover. They just rotate Cork, Wanyama, Schneiderlin over the season, when games, tiredness, injuries, etc... kick in. Add in the fact that Jack can cover well in various positions and you have a very valuable player. Unless Saints have a better player coming in I don't see any point, and from that perspective I think Jack's position at the club is as secure as any player.
I know why Cork's position is being questioned in the media. It's because his contract extension hasn't been sorted yet. So what..? Nor was Jose's until a short time ago. He's still here. So will Jack if Saints have any brains.

That would be fine TSS but Ron said there is no new contract. That's what has got us all wondering.

Cork is often my man of the match, and one of our most consistent performers. He has to stay. And he`s a goal machine now too.

I have seen him do a good job at RB and seen him torn to shreds. These days the first thing that a FB needs is speed and Jack sadly lacks that, bit like playing Yoshie RB. He is a Defensive midfielder so is cover for Morgan and Vic but no one else. Could probably play CB but have never seen him in this position. If we are after Claise then Cork would be 4th or 5th choice.

I like Cork, but we have a ton of midfielders. If Clasie comes in, Cork will likely go. And even if Clasie doesn't come in but we get a really good offer, Cork might go.

Really..? When did he actually say that..? Was he just saying that there was no new contract yet..[?] but his slightly less than fine grasp of English let him down..? Recently, he spoke of Cork as being an excellent professional, so why would he let him go..? I don't see it happening.
