Football League Cup⦠Second Round Derby County v Charlton Athletic Tuesday 26th August 2014 7:45pm Kick-Off Referee⦠Graham Salisbury (Lancashire) Charlton Athletic and Steve McClaren face up against each other in the League followed instantly by an appearance in a Cup competition⦠where have heard that before? Of course the year was 2006 and Charlton would play host to Steve McClarenâs Middlesbrough in the Premier League, the result that day was a home victory yet just ten days later the two sides would face up against each other again this time in the FA Cup, a 0-0 draw was played out that day and in the subsequent replay Middlesbrough would go on to win 4-2 in what would become known to Charlton fans as âOperation Riversideâ. Fast forward the clock eight years and a similar occurrence will happen again⦠Just one week ago the Addicks would celebrate an impressive 3-2 league win against Steve McClarenâs latest side; Derby County⦠once again the two sides will find themselves up against each other just seven days later as Derby this time play the role of hosts in the 2nd Round of the League Cup. Of course when this situation arises as it sort of did last season a smaller Match Preview is released The League Cup so far⦠In the first round both sides would find themselves up against lower league opposition⦠Derby County would be the first team to kick off the League Cup 2014/15 as they travelled to League Two side; Carlisle United in front of the Sky Cameras⦠a 2-0 victory would see them through to the next round and because of their high placement in the Championship last season a seeded spot in the draw for the second round. Charlton on the other hand would play host to Colchester United and an impressive 4-0 victory would follow, goals from Yoni Buyens, Lawrie Wilson and Simon Church would send the Addicks through, of course finishing so low in the Championship last season would mean that the Addicks would not be seeded for this round. Last Charlton Victory at Pride Park In continuation with BBC Sport going over the top in their post match report of the League fixture between these two sides⦠Charlton havenât won in Derby this century and after five attempts their last win was in February 1999 (as Charlton would attempt a fight against survival in their first Premier League season), goals from Andy Hunt and Martin Pringle would hand Charlton all three points. Charlton Team News Being a Cup competition you can never be sure of the changes that the Manager may make⦠Chris Solly should make way for academy youngster Joe Gomez whilst Lawrie Wilson and Morgan Fox could also come into the side in place of Johann Gudmundsson and Rhoys Wiggins. The biggest news will be whether Stephen Henderson is fit enough to play following his hamstring injury against Wigan Athletic (Nick Pope would look set to deputise once more should Henderson be injured), whilst the big shock was Michael Morrison failing to make the bench against Huddersfield on Saturday so it remains to be seen whether it is injury or just out of favour with the manager that keeps Morrison from a starting berth. Possible Side to Face Derby County Pope Gomez â Morrison â Bikey â Fox Wilson â Cousins â Buyens â Harriott Moussa â Vetokele Substitutes Bench Henderson â Ben-Haim â Wiggins â Gudmundsson â Tucudean â Church â Pigott. A4Lâs Prediction: 2-1 (Wilson, Vetokele)
Great preview as always Once again I'm not around tonight, this time I'm off to Upton Park. I want to see a game there before West Ham leave and one of the great old grounds of English football gets torn down. There's also a reasonable chance Diego Poyet will play, and it'll be interesting to see him if he does feature. Prediction for our game - 3-1 Derby, Moussa scoring for us.
Well, at least one of the teams will be trying to play football... There could well be a bit of an undercurrent too, given that this is the first time West Ham have played Sheffield United since the Carlos Tevez affair.
Apparently poyet is starting, so it would be interesting to hear your thoughts if he does. The fact people are comparing him at 19 years old to Buyens is plain ludicrous. I think big bob will take an almost unchanged team in to tonight. Silly will probably be the obvious change, and maybe Morrison will come in too. But I think after Saturdays disappointing performance he will want to see a return from the players. I think we will go out in extra time or penalties.
It certainly was amusing to see some people decide Poyet was overrated once he left us the way he did.
4-0 Derby, they'll want revenge, and as much as nice cup run would be I can see a weakened side, Igor won't start, neither will Gudmundsson I don't think. Give Harriott, Church and Fox a run about good performance to push for the league first team
Great work again, A4L. I'd like to see a few changes, which might not weaken the team too much. Wilson and Fox at Full back and Gomez at CB with AN Other. Cousins back in the middle with Buyens. I'd plkay Igor, we want to win after all, so Pope; Wilson; Gomez; Bikey; Fox; Gudmundsson; Cousins; Buyens; Moussa; Harriott, Vetokele. No chance of playing long-ball with those 2 up front!
The OS says "Joe Gomez is likely to replace Chris Solly at right-back while there could be a chance for Lawrie Wilson ... to stake a claim at right-wing". It is rare for the mealy-mouthed OS to be as forthright as "likely" so I assume Gomez will definitely be at RB, which is fine by me. I don't think it is up to Wilson to "stake a claim at right-wing". The position is already his by right and it is up to others to challenge. Except no-one is really talking about "right-wing". They mean "right-midfield", poor dears. I would have Morrison (and not Morrissey this time!) in at CB and Church at CF. Perm two out of Gudmundsson, Moussa and Harriott to start, according to who is fittest and most up for it. I would keep Vetokele wrapped in cotton-wool for Brighton, given our dearth of strikers. I like your Cousins and Buyens pairing at CM. I wasn't going to forecast this one as we don't know how seriously each of the clubs will be taking it, but I don't want to jinx Charlton by slacking. I have forecast four defeats in League matches so far and been wrong each time so I will go for 3-0 to Derby this time. I would be more confident had we not just beaten them. They will be out for blood this time.

Is he injured, out on loan, or did he play yesterday for u21s in a friendly? Mitov is a real baby. Giant baby, though. Odd that they haven't taken the chance to rest Jackson. I would interpret that as he won't start against Brighton, but apparently he played OK against Huddersfield.
Phillips got injured in the warm-up at Udders. I would have Morrison in my team but thought he was injured.
0-0 at HT. First 30 minutes Addicks more than equal. More possession with no goal threat as you would expect with our line-up. Final 15 minutes Derby well on top with several shots.
And that's shocking... you have 2 results behind you, both pretty poor from a United perspective, you have no European competition to worry about... can you really afford to rest your team and not use this opportunity to get a win?
I imagine LVG underestimated MK. How many third tier teams in Europe could attract a crowd of 25,000?
