It would, but again we get back to Pardew and his lack of understanding. Pardew doesn't really see 4-3-3 as some leading coaches understand it, with full backs being covered by the central midfield. All Pardew sees is 4-5-1, with the wingers - in this case, Cabella & Ben Arfa - expected to track back. It's weak on the left because Pards perseveres with the willing-yet-woeful Dummett - he seems to sh!t himself when defending, yet is also frightened to go forward (why/how's he there?).

None of which excuses Ben Arfa's lack of professionalism, which remains the main reason he's not included, but with two blanks and a possible exit to little Gills, I cannot see Pardew surviving longer than Ben Arfa.

As SBR said, this could be a banana blip.
It fills me with zero optimism that the club openly state the cups aren't important.
How is that meant to inspire ANY team we put out.

This right here is the main thing, I agree. Although I do feel things may have gone differently if HBA had apologised for the state he returned in and accepted responsobility for it rather than arguing with Pardew. Regardless of what HBA may think of him he's still, for the time being, the boss.

Personally a little tired of hearing this one, to be honest. I think it kind of conveniently passes the buck from both manager and players to the board, somehow. If you asked Ashley if he'd prefer to end the season in 10th with a Cup or 8th without, he'd take the former. All they've said, repeatedly, is that the PRIORITY is the league and the £60m or more it brings. It's just logic - where Newcastle fall down is there's no point in saying it, because of the hysteria it generates. I'm fairly sure Charnley et al regret ever having been "honest" in the first place.

I think the League Cup is where younger players for a club of our size should get a chance to shine. FA Cup should be the first team, but I would hope and expect to see Aarons, Perez, maybe even Armstrong or Satka, having a go. The manager would expect that a team with all four of these should on paper have enough vs. Gills, and so should all of us. The squad may not be incredible, but it's a top-10 in the top flight squad and it should not take our first eleven to beat Gillingham.

Pardew played weakened teams last year to stop the risk of injuries to key players. This is part of the same issue. The performances in cups has been dire for a while now whilst so called 'smaller' clubs have gone on good cup runs.

No, I'm not defending his FA Cup stance, it was bang wrong for a club like ours and he's failed to learn on that score. League Cup's a different matter. Thing is if we're in a position around January where he has to rest players, he'll have already been sacked.

You southern softies don't know what wet looks like... pop up to the Toon in deepest darkest Winter and you need a canoe or a snowmobile (temperature dependent) to get around. :)

Albert, how very dare you, I'm one of those southern softies!
My Dad moved down here 36yrs ago before I was born.
Must be something in it though cos by his own admission he now finds the North sea cold!

It is pretty wet down here but its not anywhere near flood like!

    lololololololo love it.
A mate of mine moved to Portsmouth at 16 and he wears jackets out on the piss in Winter and stuff like that now.. proper jessie!
I've lived in Consett 21 years and we put a vest on when it dips below zero :)... the shops simply don't sell jackets or fleeces in this town.

A quick hi from another southern softie,

I am hoping that we can give a good account of ourselves tonight but not expecting any upsets, for the last couple of seasons we have had defensive issues which seem to have already cost us dearly so far this season, if your strikers are short on confidence then our defenders will be a bonus to you.
Sad to say I think our young team will allow their heads to drop if they concede early, equally if we score first they will all drop deep and defend which as already explained is not one of our strong points.
My hope is that we can get through the game with no more than a 3 goal margin and no new injuries as we have a big game on Saturday against one of the 4 teams I am expecting/hoping will finish below us in the league.

As forecast the rain stopped at 02.00pm and is expected to remain dry for the evening.

All the best for the season, apart from tonight obviously.

All the best to the Gills for the rest of the season fella from a Norvern Mankey :).
Looking forward to a good old fashioned cup tie.
Am on the lookout for streams as we speak.

Good chance for Riviere to get a goal, and I'm not sure how match fit Ferrerya is. Maybe Perez should have started, but you can't accuse Pards of playing a weakened team for this one. Six changes but other than Abeid and Obertan, I'd be happy with us starting with the others.

I think Riviere needs goals more at the moment so can see why he's starting. I'm expecting Ferreyra on around the hour mark.

Obertan will probably play well tonight against some pub teamers and that will somehow justify him being on the bench once again on Saturday. It just boggles the f**ing mind, it really does. Saylor will be fist pumping all the while, finding his level at last playing against League 1 opposition.
