We still desperately need a top midfielder.

What do people think of the idea of selling Lucas and bringing back Xabi?

Would absolutely love Xabi back in the squad. Would be a great stop gap for this year.

Xabi is better than Lucas, would welcome him back, but I think we need to look to the future.

Lucas' is off on loan to Napoli. As for Xabi, he doesn't have the energy for our game now?

Your idea's suggest we should sit back and try and stop City. That would doom us. We have to work the ball our self and go for it, at least for the first hour. Allen is the best player for this. Gerrard to. Top passing players who can move it and create.

Can is young and maybe Rodgers thinks he needs more time. We have not seen him in a competitive game yet.

No, not sit back, but be responsible. We need players who can tackle and win the ball back when we lose it. Allen can't tackle. Gerrard is too old and slow to handle this job by himself. Against a slower, less able team we might be OK.

Allen is type cast as a defensive mid but this is really the worst position for him... he works much better as an attacking mid (where we have so many better options).

People said that about Gerrard. Just sit him in the middle distributing and breaking up, let the Sterling's and the Lallanas do the running about.

As for the future, long term yeah that;s where we should be looking but for one season he'd be great. Same as Toure but might actually make positive contributions

Allen is not a defensive mid. He is also very good at pressing, tracking, closing down, status and being a permanent nuisance to the opponent. What he does isnt pretty but it is valuable.

Do people even know that much about Emre Can? You all seem to think he is world class already by the way you talk. But he is young and new to this club and country. Rodgers has said he needs time. No doubt if he makes one error every one will be out to destroy him.

I dont think you quite understand Gerrard's role tactically.

We've done that with Can. Alonso coming back would be incredible.

Alonso & Gerrard in the same midfield <yikes>

As much as I love Xabi, don't think he'd suit us now. We need a Masch type, not Alonso. Gerrard is doing that Alonso role of sitting back and playing the passes, we need a proper defensive midfielder to win the ball back and sweep up after everyone.

Dont know what the result will be tonight as City are quality, have been together a good while and are at home. However, love looking at our team, and our bench. Its great to see the options that can come on. Also have the likes of Balotelli, lallana and Suso that can still come into the matchday squad if needed.

I may be proved wrong but we certainly have the potential to be stronger than last season even without Luis.

    Come on you Reds

Not happy with the lineup tbh. Allen and Gerrard would get mobbed by Fernando, Toure and Fernandinho. Would have prefered Can over Allen or move Hendo in there and started Markovic in RW.

And what's up with Suso, why is BR overlooking him, hardly featured in preseason as well. What's the ****ing point of having Toure on the bench.

When ever Gerrard has played as one of two holding players recently the team has struggled because it doesnt suit him. Play him central as a deep midfield pivot and he is fantastic.

Hendo is playing in the middle? Markovic instead of who? Coutinho? Sterling? He's just come back from injury, don't think he deserves to start ahead of either of them two at the moment.

    Bit worries from set pieces.

Just did a stat and Lovren & Skrtel are 6ft something, then Hendo & Johnson the next tallest at 6ft (with Gerrard I think). Neither of those 2 are brilliant in the air when compared to Dzeko, Kompany, Demicheles & Toure <yikes>

Add in Sterling, Moreno, Allen who are all about 5ft 2 and can't see them being much good at defending in the air.

We've got Coutinho and Allen on at the moment- both of whom have very similar attributes, only Coutinho is much better of the two. I'd rather Coutinho start (replace him with Allen if he gets tired) and have someone who can disrupt City better on instead... that wouldn't be Marko.

Allen usually does better as a sub anyway when the opponents are worn down a little and his lack of pace isn't so obvious and his work rate wins through instead.
