Do you think there will ever be a third World war? Do you think the Chinks will flex their muscles? They're starting to build Aircraft carriers.

WW3 is already here. Wars all over Africa and the Middle East. America at war. Britain at war. France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Canada all engaged in war.

I can't see why you'd say WW3 is already here? Are Russia and China involved in any major conflicts? Are the economies of the countries you've mentioned focused on the war effort? Are the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan even wars as such, rather than occupation/peace-keeping missions?

There have been wars pretty much constantly since the end of WW2, we'll know when WW3 kicks off <ok>

i could see china start to get involved in smaller nations/wars much the way the west does now especially in near by nations, they might also fight proxy wars much like the west/soviets did in afghan in the 80's but thanks to mutually assured destruction we're not going to be living red dawn any time soon <ok>

So WWII only started when America joined in?

Yes, they are wars. We fire on them. They fire on us. Only politicians would spin it to say it's a peace mission.

    Nukes sorta spoil things.

America nuked Japan to force the Russians to stop trying to take over the World after WWII. The Russians had the biggest armed forces in the World by 1945.

What happened to go old conventional warfare - them were the days. <ok>

No, but the big European countries were still powerful back then so could be compared to one of the superpowers today like China/US/Russia (not on the same scale but in importance). It's not a WW until most of the major powers are involved, and the US was involved lending us equipment and money throughout. The Russian non-aggression pact was signed so they were technically involved too and Japan attacked China. We were pulling people out of all our colonies to boost the war effort, fighting wars all over the globe.

What we have today is nothing compared to what could happen. WW3 will **** this planet up <ok>

True but the military strength/tactics of the countries we're fighting doesn't really make them wars, just an expensive/explosive-fuelled occupation.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one Toby much as it will upset barnsley_boy to do so.

It all comes down to definition. The politics of the world is far removed from that of the 1910s and 1930s/40s. By the same token, the definition of a world war has also changed.

In my humble opinion of course.

so are you looking at world war as a matter of countries involved? plus not many of the wars going on around the world are actually linked, unlike WW2. even the counter insurgancy we're fighting in afghan isnt linked to the war in libya although many of the participants are the same.

I'm saying that many of the wars are linked politically due to the 'globalisation' that's taken place since the end of WWII.

If you were to look at the root causes of many of the wars and conflicts that are taking place around the world right now I'm sure you would find many links and similarities.
