OT, Am I right in believing you live in Belgium?

Cycling from Amsterdam to Calais and will be crossing through Belgium. Will be heading to Bruges from Ternuezen then towards the coast and down to Dunkirk. What are the roads like and general cycling in Belgium. I know Holland is good have been many times and just assumed Belgium was the same.

I used to live in Belgium but moved back to Blighty about a year ago.

Not sure about cycling in Belgium as I've always taken the car but I know that Belgian drivers are terrible and the fatality rate is quite high. There should be a safe enough road down the coast and if you use the main canal into Bruges; you'll stay far enough away from killer motorists :)

    I live in Belgium <ok>

Where I live , Antwerp , they actually have designated lanes for cyclists , not sure about Bruges , but should be something similar. OT is right about Belgian drivers though , they're awful.

Fairly certain the Bruges does have dedicated cycle lanes once inside the ring road but they don't extend into the centre as it's too cramped to have them.

Can't be as bad as the Irish

They don't even need a qualified driver in the car with them when they are learning.

In Belgium you only need roughly 20 hours with an instructor; take your test and if you fail then you can drive by yourself for the next 18 months... where you go back to take your test and likely fail again.. and repeat <yikes>

A huge number of Brussels residents don't have full driving licences but have been driving for 10 years. Scared the hell out of me when I bought a new car and drove it.

What's Belgium like to live in? I have to choose somewhere French speaking to live in my third year at uni. Is Belgium even particularly French speaking? I know it's one of the official languages but I also heard Dutch is more common. Cheers.

As long as you remember the right side is the left side in the UK but the right side is the right side in Belgium.

Belgium is a great country to live in. I miss it like mad.

If you're studying French then you need to be in the Southern part of the country or Brussels (a French speaking enclave in a Flemish area) as the North of the country is Flemish speaking.

The Southern parts of the country suffer high unemployment and they can still be a tad aloof (as with all things Gallic) but in Brussels it's a decent mix of French, Flemish and English speakers.
