Tuesday sees Norwich City enter this season's Capital One Cup competition at the second round stage. Their opponents are Crawley Town who knocked out City's fierce rivals Ipswich Town in the last round by one goal to nil. City enter this fixture on the back of three wins in the Skybet Championship and sit in third place in the league table. Crawley on the other hand have had an indifferent start to their campaign having lost their last two league outings and sit mid table in League One.

So who are Crawley Town ? Founded in 1896 the 'Reds' or 'Red Devils' have spent most of their existence outside of the Football League and didn't turn semi-professional until 1962. They finally achieved league status in season 2010-11 when they were promoted as Champions from the Football Conference, reaching the 5th Round of the FA Cup in the same year where they were finally knocked out by the more famous 'Red Devils' Manchester United. In their first season as a football league club they managed a third place finish and another promotion up the football pyramid to League One.

    Match History

Well basically there isn't one, tomorrow will see the first competitive match between the two sides.

Instead let's take a look at City's history in this competition as it is a tournament where there have enjoyed relative success. City won the trophy for the first time in 1962 where they beat Rochdale in a two-legged final, it must be noted however that the competition was in it's infancy and top flight sides didn't enter. Winning the League Cup that year was the only real highlight of the 1960's for City other than an FA Cup victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 1967.

In 1969 City appointed Ron Saunders as manager and with an emphasis on extreme fitness and desire he turned the club around guiding The Canaries to the old League Division Two title in 1972 and promotion to the top flight for the very first time. In their first season playing in the top tier of English football, Saunders took City to the League Cup final and their first ever Wembley appearance. The League Cup was now considered a major trophy with entry into European competition the prize for the victors. Sadly it was not to be City's day as a low strike from Tottenham substitute Ralph Coates was enough to secure the trophy for the Londoners. It was the second time Spurs had won the trophy having beaten Aston Villa 2-0 in the final two years earlier.

Norwich were relegated back to Division Two at the end of the 1973-74 season but bounced straight back at the first attempt. They finished in third place that year however had it not been for the introduction of the '3 up, 3down' system it would have meant City remaining in the second division. As well as gaining an immediate return to the top tier, City's new flamboyant manager John Bond also took them to another League Cup final. Alas once again The Canaries cup dreams were dashed thanks to a goal from Aston Villa's Ray Graydon. City's Kevin Keelan so very nearly became the first goalkeeper to save a penalty in a Wembley final, but Graydon followed up his parried shot to score.

City fans had to wait another ten years for a Wembley outing but finally tasted success in 1985. The competition was now sponsored and had a new trophy and a new name. City won 'The Milk Cup' thanks to a deflected Asa Hartford strike and a subsequent penalty miss from Sunderland's Clive Walker. On their way to the final City had knocked out rivals Ipswich Town in a two-legged semi-final. City were denied entry into the UEFA Cup the following year as English clubs were barred from all European football because of hooligan followings. The Heysel disaster in May shortly after City's final triumph was the straw that finally broke the camel's back, 39 people lost their lives at the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus.

Since then The Canaries League Cup record, now known as the 'Capital One Cup' with the original trophy now presented to the winners, has been disappointing to say the least never having got anywhere near the final. Let's hope that tomorrow is the start of a cup run that takes City to Wembley glory once again.

    LATEST TEAM NEWS 25/08/14 - 15:45

Neil Adams has told the press to expect some changes for the visit of Crawley, with Cameron Jerome and Carlos Cuellar in line to make their debuts for the Canaries after signing last week.

The full extent of the injury that forced Ryan Bennett (ankle) off early in Saturday’s East Anglian derby is yet to be determined; he’s a doubt for selection along with Jonny Howson (knee) and Gary Hooper (calf).

Martin Olsson will serve the final game of his three-match suspension.

BOSS WANTS GOOD FORM TO CONTINUE IN CAPITAL ONE CUP

NEIL Adams insists changes to his team for Tuesday night’s visit of Crawley Town will not result in a change in emphasis.

The Canaries welcome the League One outfit to Carrow Road in the second round of the Capital One Cup (7.45pm).

City’s manager confirmed some of the squad members who haven’t featured as heavily over the course of the past three weeks will get minutes, but he isn’t taking the game lightly.

“It’s a great opportunity to give one or two the chance to go and show us what they can do, but we will certainly treat the game and the opposition with the respect they deserve,” he told canaries.co.uk.

“It isn’t going to be a completely changed team; I think the players that we put out there will show that they want to win.

“Obviously we’ll have to have one eye on Bournemouth, which is the priority, but you want to win games and we’ll want to win on Tuesday.”

Adams is wary that Crawley, who knocked City’s East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town out in round one, will be keen to upset the odds once again.

“The thing you get from any team, but particularly teams that are in a lower division than you, is that they have nothing to lose,” he added.

“They see it as an opportunity to go and make a name for themselves, and what will happen is we will lose the game if we don’t treat it properly, guaranteed.

“We’ll treat it right, we’ll prepare right – yes we will make changes for it, but make no mistake we want to win.”

When asked whether a victory would be important for momentum, Adams responded: “Absolutely. Everybody says that losing games becomes a habit, but winning games becomes a habit too.

“What we don’t want to do is lose a game then come back to the league. You can’t pick and choose your times to turn it on and off, so let’s win as many as we can and keep this run going.”

    Great work K I O.

Especially liked the 'As for history, well, there isn't one'.

Absolutely no idea what kind of team we're going to put out. I guess Cuellar, Jerome, O'Neil, Murphy and Rudd will play?

I really like the cups even though we usually do terribly it is much easier to get tickets at the last minute and if we get a big club we may even get on TV .
KIO has a real flair for making these threads and after clicking on lots of attempts over the years on here it's clearly not a copy n paste job from the BBC site, i feel terrible mentioning it but after a while i couldn't stomach the corny USA parody versions that PC used to make and nobody wanted to tread on his toes by making one themselves.
Adding pictures and links to highlights of goals is a great addition.

Yep, looks like you've got this gig for the duration, KIO, - should you choose to accept it!
Great work once again. Maybe CyprusSyd could try and arrange an inter-club MTD challenge.

KIO is surely in pole position should that ever transpire <ok>

Even if they're not as elaborate as this, KIO, they're still informative and - most importantly, written from a reasonably unbiased stance, which encourages fans of away teams to become involved.

Equal space given to both teams history, recent form, goalscorers etc. Splendid <ok>

I've added latest team news and Neil Adams' pre match comments, it seems like there will be quite a few changes which was only to be expected I suppose.

Don't think it'll be quite that easy SN23, although i don't mind being wrong, occasionally.
I think we'll see a weaker city side tonight with the new guys getting some game time. And remember they did only manage to beat the "mighty Town" by a single goal in extra time?........ your right we should ****ing stuff them taking that into account.

Harsh on PC, SN23. He put a lot of effort into the match day threads and they were always a good read.

Having said that, these are excellent, KIO. I'm more than happy with either.
