But having established themselves for a second year in the Barclays Premier League, as well earning a Europa League qualifying spot courtesy of their run to the FA Cup final, Hull are finding it harder to strike a deal this time round. Instead, they have been forced to shell out top dollar for the likes of Jake Livermore and Robert Snodgrass, who cost a combined B£15million, with more to come when the Tom Ince tribunal makes its verdict. Bruce is aware their continental counterparts would be priced more competitively but does not yet have the scouting network to gamble. "There's the problem in our game. You identify a young English lad but you can get a player from overseas for half the price," Bruce told the Hull Daily Mail during the Tigers' warm-weather training camp in Portugal. "If I can buy in our market I always will. You pay a premium for a young British player and that's what we've done. "We've got a 22-year-old, a 24-year-old and a 26-year-old. It's cost us more money but I would expect that. "You know what you're going to get. There'll come a time when I know what I'm going to get from the foreign market and hopefully we can get that set-up in the next 12 months." Bruce is looking to add another British signing before the season gets under way, but admits his long-term pursuit of Tottenham captain Michael Dawson is foundering. Bruce is reported as saying talks with Spurs have hit a "stalemate".
On the plus side around £4.5m is profit and £7m came out of last seasons budget. When you think about it, up until £11.5m we're doing a straight swap. On a different note, I assume transfer fees are subject to VAT, and that the fees we see banded about are before VAT? So when we're paying a £10m transfer fee it's actually costing us £12m? Anyone able to clarify this?
Once we get above £12m, we're possibly into Wellbeck territory but obviously they're not going to be interested in our fringe players, so we'd need probably £15m plus for him, which isn't going to leave much for other signings.
Asides from Dawson, we don't know who bruces targets are for the other positions. Overspending on Rhodes may mean we have no budget to bring in these others.
Its silly blowing all our money on Rhodes, it might be worth like others have said, get loans in a pay big wages, like Everton did with Lukaku .. if you pay the wages and a loan fee, we would get the quality to see us through another Season in the premier league, downside is we dont own the players and there is no sell on fee you get owning them, suppose its like taking a contract hire car out, its never yours at the end of the day, but you get a great car for a few years

Having looked quickly transfer fees between two UK clubs at definitely subject to VAT but and transfer between a UK and EU club is exempt - from HMRC themselves. I can't find any definitive source for this but found someone on a forum post supposedly quoting an official source that transfer fees are VAT inclusive but the VAT can be claimed back.
Why are you worrying about vat. Leave that to the bean counters. Peter saxton will be along shortly to explain.
The £2m isn't a cost. The club pays over to HMRC the VAT they charged on their sales (including ticket prices) and deduct any VAT they have paid out. If they pay out more in VAT they get the difference back.
Deffo a player we should have been looking at last season is Aron Jóhannsson from AZ, but injured now out for a few months
