I don't understand why when people are depressed they take to alcohol. When has that ever worked? If it did doctors would prescribe it.
It is far too late for Gazza. There are hundreds of celebrities who have gone before him down the path of alcoholism and depression. Ernest Hemmingway, Billie Holiday, Elton John, Mel Gibson, Errol Flynn, Shane McGowan, Billy Joel, Robin Williams, Oliver Reed, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Orson Welles are some notables who strayed down this path. Some have managed to beat it but most succumbed. Seeing him in this pathetic state is sad and it is also commendable that he has a number of friends who are continually trying to help. 'arry Redknap has offered him a job as youth coach saying he would pick him up at 5.45am at the top of his street each morning because "I love the man"! I believe he will follow the great Brazilian, Garincha, and will be found dead lying in a gutter somewhere. Very sad.
Poor old Tigerroo is so far gone down the path of alcoholism that his avatar is a can of beer. In his mind he is his drink.
you are such a ****ing twat. it is up to him how he spends his cash, I do agree that he will be dead before 50 though. At least we haven't wasted a liver on him a la George Best.
Do you dispute he's ill? Do you not believe his illness should be treated as an illness as other illnesses are? Millions of people (or nobodies as you refer to them) are being treated daily for the same illness and receiving the sympathy they deserve. They are not being judged publicly by the same ignoramus' that are judging PG. although I'd guess given the opportunity many of you would.
Studies have shown that up to 60% of men suffering with Bipolar disorder also suffer with alcoholism. They are connected and many scientific studies show this to be the case. I'm guessing you've read plenty more that prove your statement, that they are separate? You know he wasn't always ill how? I've read a lot of ignorant posts from people who are ill educated on the subject matter. You appear to be completely ignorant of the subject matter. You are offering opinion as fact, I say unless you can offer evidence then your opinion is bullshit. Ill educated drivel.
Read some scientific studies, educate yourself on the subject & maybe you wouldn't be inclined to make ignorant comments. Start thinking along the lines of when people are suffering from depression they are not always in a position to make rational decisions or choices.
I came very close to being an alcoholic. The amount I drank in those days would, by most people, class me as being an alcoholic. I worked as a rakehand on an asphalt road crew for over 10 years. The two guys I was 'batching' with would neck a bottle of grog at 5.00am and drink another one on the way to work. A further one going out to the job would have to last until lunch (we occasionally had a 'stubby or can' at smokoe mid-morning depending on the temperature). A couple at lunch, one on the way back to the depot at works end and a further one going back to the pub where we would remain until 'stumps' every night. I never got to sampling an 'early morning' bottle and very rarely a 'stubby' at morning smokoe but we certainly shifted some grog. The difference was that I would rarely drink on the week-end. All of those friends I worked and drank with have passed on with alcoholic related medical conditions strangely enough all at the same age - 58. I am due to turn 76 in November so I guess it must have been to do with the fact that I got transferred into the Radio Room/Dispatch/Wages/Weighbridge where I needed the arms of an octopus and the reflexes of a cat - but there was obviously no drinking whatsoever - where I spent the last 10 years of my 23 years service. Nowadays there is NO drinking whatsoever on the job and the workers must wear long trousers, long sleeved shirts and hats at all times. I wore shorts and a safety vest plus my beloved stetson. Since retiring I have paid the price with having about half a dozen skin cancers removed from my arms, face and back, one as recently as last Thursday. Alcohol is still a 'way-of-life' in Australia put consumption is slowly going down and the 'pokies' are now the big money-earners. Can't beat a really good barbie though although Australian sausages are the equivalent to chewing tobacco and sawdust in taste as compared to those beautiful English bangers.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/02/130212075432.htm This is a good piece that states how they can be associated, but that it is not always the case - what is also interesting is the way in which substance induced depression is defined and ringfenced from other forms of the illness. .
You've missed my point completely. I'm asking what is his excuse for domestic violence? If someone you had never heard of was described to you as an alcoholic wife beater I suggest you wouldnt have much sympathy and would probably deduce they were a bit of a scumbag. Mhy point was why is Gazza getting so much support? It's like his misdemeanours have been completely glossed over cos he could play football a bit.
You replied to my post which stated he was ill & included a quote used recently by Steven Fry. Which suggested that people with mental illness are perceived & treated differently than people with other illnesses. This thread has proved, in the main, the point he was making. If someone's ill then they are ill regardless of their history. Mental illness does not make you a waste of space as was being suggested in the lead post. I don't see the need to bring up his past as it's not relevant to the thread. Unless you're saying he's a waste of space solely because he gave his gold digging ex wife, who still makes a living off his name, a slap. If you are say that. People with cancer & other illnesses have done worse & still received sympathy & treatment.
Are you suggesting that, because she earns money by being the former Mrs Gascoigne, that she deserves a slap? I don't care if he's an acoholic, mentally ill or clinically depressed - any man who physically beats his female partner is a disgrace.
Then say that as I suggested, it's irrelevant to the debate regarding the recognition of depression, bipolar, bulimia as illnesses worthy of sympathy & lifelong treatment. I'd of just said any person who beats their partner. Do you not think any woman that beats her male or female partner is a disgrace? She's a leech & a gold digger. She exploited him & his situation. but nowhere did I suggest she deserved a slap.
