It's wonderful to see supporters commemorating the tragic deaths of the two NUFC fans on flight MH17. However this 17th minute applause? Every game? Home and away? Just seen Villa fans joining in there. I'm not being cynical but is it practicable to sustain this all season at EVERY game? I do support it, but I'm not sure if it can be kept up? What's your thoughts on it.
i think if it was our fans we would be more than willing to honour our fallen brothers by doing it all season, after all it could have been any one of us
I agree but just wondering if it really can be sustained that's all. If it had been one of ours without a doubt the same would happen. Just curious that's all.
My view is that one respectful, and heartfelt, applause by the whole ground is wonderful. Doing it every match is more for the people doing it in my opinion ......... 'look what great supporters we are'. Sorry but I think it'll becomes a competition between us, Newcastle, Villa, Bolton etc eventually. I blame Princess Diana for all this tbh.
for me keeping it going would be a mark of respect that they are gone but not forgot, just my opinion like
Surely they'll never be forgotten and we've paid our respects. I remember Villa signing 'no respect' at us because we didn't realise they were having a clap for a minute. If this continues you'll need a leaflet handed out to remind you of all the times you need to clap. I remember when a couple of Sunderland lads died in a car crash at Wetherby, on their way to a match ...... I doubt many other people do. There was a paragraph in the match programme. Is the fact that it was a terrorist attack that makes the Newcastle situation so much more 'worthy' ........ I've no idea tbh.
I dont think they will ever be forgotten by NUFC & SAFC fans! If they can keep the gesture up for the rest of the season then good luck to them! I just hope that the rest of the clubs are aware of it when the clapping starts! But what has seems to be have been forgotten is the crash itself! Theres been no answers, nobody has been made accountable and no justice! There was hell on when it first happened, repercussions were to be immense, but its as if it has all been swept under the carpet, by both sides!!!! It stinks!
Football, in this country, should be ashamed. Every club, especially Newcastle, should have said that they wouldn't expect players to go to Russia in Europe or the World Cup. The players, in my opinion, have let the supporters down by making it obvious that they're not a big issue.
Not one to put the cat amongst the pigeons like.. Didn't realise it was to happen at every match, but it does seem a bit extreme. (that sounds so wrong). Sad fact people are dying everyday in terrorist attacks, and it's an even sadder fact, that todays news is tomorrows history. I know i may be coming across as unsensitve etc, but just how far and how long do you take things? Do any of them remember any of their fans that were servicemen, killed by terrorist acts, who also attended matches? Life moves on, only the scousers cling to things for-ever.
Too much money is at stake for that sort of gesture though I'm afraid!! I made the mistake at looking at some rather graphic photos of the crash site! One was of a child (3-5 years old???) who had their clothes blown off but other than that seemed to have remained untouched! Its an image I will never forget! Cant get the thought out of my head of being in that situation! That moment when you know you, your wife and your children are going to die! The last thought going through your head would be your kids and wanting the opportunity to just grab them!
maybe thats a good reason to keep it going though. our government should be doing more to find out wtf happened
I think the loss of all life lost on flight MH17 testimony to the fact that war is pointless. I also believe something like this can shock a community and if the Newcastle fans want to applaud them for 17 minutes through a season, let them. After all, monkey see monkey do. Seriously though, it was a real WTF?!? moment as a world event and I felt truly was sad when I heard about 2 football-loving lads from the North-East whose lives had been dashed away on a domestic flight. In the days that followed it seemed all the more tragic, by the sheer pointless waste in terms of human slaughter and their termination in a disputed air space that had nothing to do with them. Imagine my relief and joy when it eventually became clear that none of them were Liverpool fans.
I was very sorry for what happened to these lads, but to be honest I lost one of my best mates recently who I have sat with since the SoL opened, and it is him that concerns me... I say let the Mags honour their own, but I don't see why we should be doing anything special.
All good comments and observations, for what it is worth may I add mine. I too initially thought it could be thought to be attention seeking (I appreciate it is not) - it is less than a week since the funeral and the gesture is a way of all supporters who were not at the Funeral to offer their support to the families and remember Liam and John. If this becomes a weekly feature then the toon fans need to give it an end game, e.g. they will continue the 17th minute tribute until John Alders body is returned to Newcastle. With regards to Russian hosting the World Cup, then the UK football supporters should not attend, nor should the Dutch or Australian.
I'm with Comm on this, one off showing of respect alls well. Drag it out over the season and it starts to look self serving. And a round of applause at a football match isn't going to give our government a kick up the arse.
