Gus Poyet’s men opened their 2014/15 campaign with a 2-2 draw away at West Bromwich Albion, with Sebastian Larsson grabbing a late leveller at The Hawthorns. Building on that result upon a return to home soil will be the order of the day for the Black Cats as they target a first Premier League victory over United at the Stadium of Light – with their only previous home success coming at Roker Park in March 1997. They did edge out the Red Devils in a Capital One Cup contest in front of their own supporters last season, en route to reaching the final of that competition, and tasted victory again at Old Trafford in May as they ended with a flourish. United, though, will be heading to the north east determined to start moving a new era in the right direction. A productive pre-season under the guidance of Van Gaal bode well, but the ghosts of 2013/14 came back to haunt them last weekend as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home by Swansea City. Fresh faces have arrived to help turn the tide, with the promise of more on the way, but United need a new-look coaching and playing staff to start clicking if they are to force their way back into top-four contention this term. Match Apointments Referee:Martin Atkinson Assistants:S Child & H Lennard Fourth Official:Fatty Dowd Sunderland Team News Poyet has a number of selection decisions to make as Sunderland contemplate introducing new additions and experienced heads into their starting XI. Costel Pantilimon could be handed his debut following a nervy display from Vito Mannone at West Brom(bullshit), while Wes Brown is expected to be moved to centre-half against his former club at the expense of Valentin Roberge. Emanuele Giaccherini remains sidelined with a groin complaint, but Billy Jones and Santiago Vergini are back in training and will be pushing for spots at full-back. Manchester United Team News United may be tempted to hand new arrival Marcos Rojo an immediate opportunity to prove his worth in the Premier League as fellow left-back Luke Shaw is nursing a knock. He is not the only one, with Van Gaal’s options against Swansea severely depleted as Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia, Jonny Evans and Tom Cleverley missed out Robin van Persie is close to returning to full match fitness and may be involved at Sunderland, but Marouane Fellaini definitely misses out as he has suffered ankle ligament damage. jamie jackson ‏@JamieJackson___ 1m Van Gaal suggests Rojo can't play at Sunderland as he has no "working permit" - Herrera injured, he also says...RvP "ready to play" Herrera and Rojo could be big misses for them... Alternatively RVP should have a field day against JOS
Is Buckley ready to start? I think we might see Gomez or Larsson on the left with Buckley coming on as an impact sub. Van Aanholt pace and willingness to get forward I think it could work. Id personally go with Larsson as he'll offer pva more protection. -------------------Mannone------------------------- Vergini--------Oshea------Brown-------Van Aanholt -------------------Cattermole------------------------ Johnson------Rodwell-----Gomez-----------Larsson -------------------Wickham-------------------------- This also gives us the option of Johnson and Larsson interchanging throughout the game.
I'm at work for this one so will have to record the game and watch which means I will have to endure the "sky to four bias" commentary. They must maintain the top 4 brand at all costs.
FFS... No work permit. Have you ever heard such bullshit? Herrera won't be that much of a miss, he's not got ticking in the side yet, I expect Rooney to drop in, if he fetches Cleverley in he's a ****ing idiot. We have Kagawa, who I'd pick before that idiot. But this shows exactly why we need to go all out to buy Khedira at any cost.
Hasn't Khedira handed in a transfer request along side Di Maria? Both would benefit your side mate, a lot as well Cleverly is possibly the most overrated piece of **** in the country No Utd manager seems to like Kagawa for some reason
Cleverley isn't over rated mate, I don't know a single person who thinks he's even remotely good enough for this league. I can't stand seeing him in a United shirt. I hope we go for Khedira, Di Maria I'd love but Khedira has to be a priority for LVG, we can't pack the midfield with lightweight lads like Januzaj, Mata and Herrera, we need some meat on the bones. Kagawa or Rooney in cm for me, alongside Fletcher. That would mean RVP started, possibly Welbeck.
@ManUtd: Van Gaal tells #MUTV four midfielders are injured for Sunderland: Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Jesse Lingard. @ManUtd: However, there's also good news for #mufc fans: Robin van Persie is back fit and available for selection. @ManUtd: Marcos Rojo is not eligible to play this Sunday vs Sunderland. Van Gaal tells #MUTV he still needs a work permit.
Poyets pre match press conference http://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2014/august/pre-united-presser Video ^^^^^^^ Love gus me like, he's just class
Up for this game, I expect a very tough match, but hopefully we can nick a win. A point would also be good
Brilliant, as per mate, toe to toe with the Spurs lad for best match threads on the board, I think the oppo's view shades it for you Tight one, fancy us, expect a vibrant crowd and a lot of enthusiasm, you have to worry about the brilliance of Mata, Rooney & RVP, but I fancy us. 2-1 the lads, Terry sick as a parrot, and £20 down to deepen his woes
Too long winded for me like. There's two threads worth in his. Would be wicked someone did 'Sunderland Vs' history threads for each match though. I've got enough on with the match thread and and the stat analysis thread so it wouldn't be me but would be wicked to have another quality match related thread on the go. Cheers fella btw.
