Even in the photos he still looks better balanced than anything England has today
I saw him at a book signing a couple of years ago, and he looked like a Hollywood film star.

Even when the premises is worth 3 million, being made homeless is a heavy one.
Shame his gold-digging wife couldn't have helped him a bit more, but thats a chance we take. He was blessed with football riches beyond any in England, but cursed with a drink problem and an awful choice in women.

Let that be a lesson to us all...

Maybe he's so skint because he had to pay a pound for every bruise he inflicted on her.

Maybe she had something to do with it

The FA missed a trick when he retired.

They should have got him going up and down the country visiting schools and youth football clubs to do coaching sessions.
It would have given Gazza some focus and would have inspired a generation

Completely agree - best comment i've heard for ages
Trouble is, that is one aspect of English football that has held us back for many years - the ability to make a selfless and constructive decision at the top level that aids the development of the nation's young footballers. They would rather an un-contentious move like putting some ham-fisted moron in charge like the cretin who ruined the next generation back in the early 90s by teaching them the Wimbledon method of International football (while they employed Graham Taylor to run our national team).
That I'm afraid is the level our football cognoscenti are at.

No wonder Gascoigne turned to drink

Sorry i don't support you views, i'm afraid he was drinking long before he retired, he has been given every chance to turn his life around, and let himself, and everyone who's tried to help him over the years down, and in respect of his wife, she may not have been the best wife in the world, but any man who beats a women for whatever reason is not a man in my view.
I don't know if your married or not, if you are, would your wife be still with you if you treated her like that.

It's a shame insofar as he lifted the nation with his play for England - seeing him cry at the World Cup showed how much the game and his country meant to him. I agree that the FA should have found a role for him. He was breathtaking to watch and such a character unlike the greedy buggers we have in the national team today.

As for domestic violence, no man should hit a woman....ever. Doesn't matter of your rich & famous or an ordinary Joe - it's unacceptable.

I was walking through a nightclub in Bristol a few years ago when a woman walking towards me decided to randomly glass the man walking in front of me, when asked why she did it, she said "Cos I wanted to" I would have quite happily hit her mate.! I can't apply such rules to scum.

    Totally agree. <ok>

Gascoigne is a flawed genius, but he's been given so much support and had so many opportunities to overcome his problems that my reservoir of pity for him has drained away.

There are people who are far more deserving of our sympathy.

Off to have his medical for the Sunday League side!

Patience unfortunately has worn thin with the bloke. Very sad, great footballer.

I find it strange that some on here are saying Gazza's ok but that Bolatilli is a cock and disgrace to the premiership. Can someone point out the difference here?

Balotelli is a disgrace to the minds of the football lovers of this world and Gazza is a disgrace to himself. I remember him transferring to Middlesbrough and when he was being interviewed in the parking lot a young lad came up and asked him to sign his football and kind hearted Gazza did just that, and then kicked the ball in to the river. Like most others I loved his commitment to the sport but somewhere below the surface demons lurked menacingly. So sad to see him go as far downhill as this.

What I fail to understand in this whole argument is why footballers can't embrace the world that supports them rather than going on these self destructive routes. Mr nice guy gets me every time.

Sky say that Harry Redknapp has stretched out a hand and offered him a coaching role with youngsters.
