I personally think Rhodes is a quality player. - One of the best finishers and players in the Championship. - Is still young. - He has been a top player for an average Blackburn side. - Could be a top player with Bruce bringing him on and around better players. He has a killer instinct when it comes to finishing and with the service from our midfield he could potentially do one better and put away more of the chances Long finished. - Has the potential to get much better and has the potential to cut it in the Premiership at a certain level. - We have signed players this season from The Championship, League One and The Scottish premiership so the whole league debate is dismissed. - People have delusions of grandeur because we was fraudulently linked with players like Welbeck. - People seem to be bitter about the fact Long has gone and seem to vent that frustration at a potential Rhodes signing. However. He isn't worth 12 million and I wouldn't want us to sign him for such a price.
I’ve not read a single post that has come across as bitter with regard to the sale of Long. Consensus has been that it was pragmatic and all in all, good business, providing that we replace him effectively and cautiously. I’d actually like us to sign Rhodes, but he’s too big a gamble at the price Blackburn would want.
They should knock a few million off for the Cairney deal. He's worth way more now. Wishful thinking...
Oh, I don't know. Nearly everyone rated Long highly before he was sold, and now suddenly half the board is saying he couldn't finish etc. There's definitely been a downward shift in the overall opinion of him on here since he was sold - it seems to be how people choose to cope with his departure. Also, people have expressed some bitterness/anger towards Long, as if he engineered this move and was desperate to get away (which as far as I know was not the case).
I really like Long and appreciate what he does for the team. He brings so much more to the team mainly because his finishing is so poor. Make no mistake, his finishing was poor with us and him leaving doesn't change that.
Some very weak subjective argument about this player. His goalscoring record is superb and he has maintained this at a club that has had periods of strife in a league we should all recognise as a difficult league in which to score so significantly. Let's be clear, his goal scoring record is not only excellent, it is consistently excellent. I have seen this guy on the telly, but also live, on a number of occasions, as I have a mate, who I travel to games with, who supports them - he also comes to our games with me (You've met him, Mel, a couple of times.) I have watched his skill and have no doubt whatsoever that he would continue scoring in the PL. He can and does work his own fair share, but, most importantly (he's a striker!!!), he scores goals, lots of goals, in different ways; his presence also serves to unnerve defences, which your own players can capitalize, if they have the tactical nous. I agree, £12m is too much, but I also think we should be prepared to pay it. Go get him.
I don’t see a way possible to present a strong subjective argument in this matter. If Blackburn refused 12m, how far would you like the club to go to sign him?
Lets be honest Long was a very good signing for us. He was worth every [penny we spent. He did a decent job for us too. If there was something that was triggered in his contact, if his Mrs was unhappy with him being at Hull then he couldn't be contented with his lot up here. However, the main thing that came out of it all was that City, Bruce and Allam, decided the offer was too good to turn down. If he did have that clause in his contract then you are legally bound to tell him if any offer is made. Bruce has always said that every player has his price and he obviously decided this was something they couldn't refuse. He could see a way of bringing in 3 more players for the money they receive. I trust him on this. We will just have to see what he brings in.
Reading the Blackburn forums some seem to think that they could use the cash to improve their squad...however they doubt all of it would be used. Some questions over FFP as well. Some are saying sell for £9m and others for more than Leeds got for McCormack. There could be a happy middle ground somewhere. They also say he's been average the past 3 games. We could waive our sell on clauses for Evans and Cairney as part of any deal...the way Tom is playing he'll probably go for quite a bit if he was ever sold.
That is my point, the argument against him is almost totally subjective; an argument based on some strangely drawn opinion that a step-up in league will end his goalscoring. The general argument against him is opinion and feel, nothing to do with what his record, his solid, consistent goals return would indicate - which is the more objective argument. Of course there is an element of gamble in such a purchase, but it is not a flip-of-a-coin, is it? I have seen him score in just about all manner of circumstances, which indicates, to me, that he is not a one-trick-pony. As for the price, that is best left to them who might need to pay it; but I rate him as a better goal-scoring threat than Shane Long (who has other attributes), so, as I believe we need a focussed striker, the £12m quoted would fall within my acceptance levels - with some prudent caveats.
Jordan Rhodes stats: 2009â2012 - Huddersfield Town - 124 - (73) 2012 - Blackburn Rovers - 90 - (51) Shane Longs stats: 2005â2011 - Reading - 174 - (44) - Please note 3 seasons in Championship (I think?) 2011â2014 - West Bromwich Albion - 81 - (19) 2014 - Hull City - 15 - (4) 2014 â Southampton - 1 - (0) Apart from that I've actually seen him play a good handful of games, so in my view he's a far better player, having a full season in the Prem he'll score 12+ easy, he's the complete footballer: He's 6'1", fair turn of pace, has great vision for the game (him and Huddles will be magic), has a lovely touch and boy can he squeeze a ball past the keeper. You know nowt if you don't rate this guy.
That's what this all appears to come down to: the finisher against the runner. Will Rhodes's finishing make up for the lack of pace? None of us can answer that either way for sure - much depends on how his 10 teammates set up and play.
Yes but that was over 10 years ago, you still think it's 85p for a liter of petrol? Also strikers ALWAYS cost more money, especially ones that consistently score more than 1 in 2 waiting...
The reason he hasn't been snapped up before the KFC boys put up a 15mil price tag on him and the value on staying in the top flight with the Sky money has nearly doubled over the last 2 years, that's why. If we don't some lucky team will.
BBC Lancashire tweeted: "Hull City's bid for Blackburn striker Jordan Rhodes has been passed to the clubs owners The Rao family."
I really rate Long, he's quick and pulls defences out of shape, so this helps other players, he'll be hard to replace. Rhodes will score goals, goals keep you in this league
"TRANSFER: Blackburn Rovers manager Gary Bowyer has confirmed that the club has received a bid from Hull for striker Jordan Rhodes."
