A load of trusted people have said that chambers had a clause in his contract that if a champions league club came in at a certain figure (guess all you want but I would assume £16,000,000.00) he was free to go. Might be why this came a bit out of the blue
Chambers is an Arsenal player now, I honestly couldn't care less. No disrespect to the original poster.
On the face of it, and going by his two appearances at CB for them, he appears to be quite the little bargain. However, once Mertesacker returns he won't get another game there for ages.
The first and last (I hope it's the last) exits this summer where the two most unexpected, and for me the hardest to accept. We move on, of course, but I have a feeling we've really lost out with Chambers. and Rickie would have made a great super sub. Oh well, spose it's all been said now.
Interesting all this talk of Reed rubbing people up the wrong way. My guess is that the coaching staff and the manager are the ones who talk to the player regularly on the football front and that Reed deals with their representatives (or parents/guardians) about the contractual stuff. Given the direct conflict of interest there, I would be surprised if there weren't some issues there. "Dammit! Les won't agree to doubling my lad's salary and inserting a buy-out clause for anything over £500k from a top 15 EPL club! He is so difficult to deal with!
He left as he had a clause to leave to a bigger team. Prowse still has this clause and Shaw did. Reed also did until we gave him a new contract, it was something Cortese liked to put in youngsters contracts for some reason.
What doesn't? Reed, Prowse, Shaw and Chambers all had release clauses. Chambers and Shaw left and Reed got a new contract with out one in. Prowse still has a clause in his contract.
I'd like to think we got a bunch of extra written into the contract if he did buy out though. Do we get a sell-on fee when Barca buys him up? What about fees if he plays X games a season, scores X goals or breaks into the national team?
The club was stupid not to announce it (if such a clause existed) when he left. It would have stopped a lot of the backlash, and they could have even blamed Cortese! Therefore I'm dubious as to whether such a clause existed.
Shaw only stayed a extra year because he was told he can join Utd after one more season. Utd were interested him before he even got in our first team. Cortese got him to sign a new contract and stay one more season with us. I wonder what was in his contract..... Cortese got a lot of players to stay a extra year when they wanted to leave, it's why so many left in one go.
It doesn't make sense to me, given Corteses's statements on how important it is to keep young players. Also agree Saints would have leaked the clause if it existed.
If there are other youngsters with these clauses, I bet they don't want to admit anyone has them at all!
