Not read this thread fully but have you thought about going to Uni full time Party? I've recently turned 30 myself and was thinking it's now or never as far as University is concerned, it's always been something i wanted to do but the thought of sitting in a class full of 18 year olds now is slightly terrifying.

I'm not tied down with any baggage (wife kids debt ect) so i'm seriously thinking about taking the plunge and applying to start next month.

Nowt to be scared about in reality. They know feck all at 18 and you have so much life experience to offer and draw upon. I've been there and got the t-shirt. If I can do it then so can anyone.

Open Uni is a good idea as you can get funding if you are skint and its more flexible than a traditional course, plus you can avoid all the other students if you want

Party I missed the most important part of your post and you are right, speak to your HR department. Don't tell them the three u's. Tell them that you want to progress within the company and ask them for help. If they **** you off, you at least know where you stand. Have a look at industry related training courses, that companies can get tax breaks for.

There are loads of courses aimed at business development, if your firm is a member of an organisation, look at their web sites for courses. Many require member companies to have ongoing training. Get whatever you can for free and **** off to a firm that values you.

I went to Uni as a mature student in my mid-twenties with no qualifications higher than O Level and I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to complete with the young intelligentsia.

Never have I been so wrong in my life.

The 18 year old majority were clueless no-nowt twats. I immediately became a renowned man of the world hero because I knew how to cook pasta.

I have watched a supposedly intelligent student trying to make cheese sauce by putting milk, ungrated cheese and corn flour in a pint glass and putting it on an electric ring.

I wrote much better essays than any of the kids because, well, I actually ****ing tried.

Believe me, your like skills will count for far more than you think.

What you need to do is get a tennis ball and cut it in half. Put the ball over the car door lock and the pressure change will pop up the lock.

Don't let your age put you off. You would not believe how many mature students mix it up with the young guns, the experience is much richer for having that variety.

look at studying to be an independent financial adviser. You mention above some of the skills needed. You will need to study hard and the subjects are not easy but with the right application you could learn part time to start. There are a couple of companies that will take a complete novice and get you through the exams and train you. The is not the best way however. Do it for yourself and once qualified you will have no problem getting a job.given time the money can be excellent but with the study period and the learning curve in the role it takes 3 to 5 years before the serious money starts. Once it does that is the rime to start your own business and earn real money and build something to sell in the future. Its very tough but get through the difficulties of the first few years and life gets good

Speaking from experience GLP? How old were you when you went may i ask?

I know age should be irrelevant when it comes to education but it's certainly the one concern i've had when deciding to go for it or not. At 30 i'm far from ready for the bone yard of course but i certainly notice how ****witted and immature giddy 18 year olds are in comparison now i've reached this age and the thought of being 12 years older then the majority if not all of the people i'll be surrounded with for 3 years is slightly off putting.

Financially i'll be able to get through the 3 years without having to make too many lifestyle changes and the challenge of getting my teeth into something new with a different career path open to me at the end of it appeals greatly but this nagging age issue wont go away.

I genuinely have no idea what ratio of students are of the 'mature' variety which doesn't help, i imagine not many at all though i could be well off the mark..

I was 19! But I made friends, and have friends that have done degrees later in life, some with no formal qualifications, but had gone as 'mature'. You would be surprised how well having had a few years 'life' experience can help you excel at University.

The difference between a 30 something going and an 18 something going is stark. You are going because you 'want' to go, 18 year olds may go because it's expected. Therefore you are already more motivated! At 18, particularly if you are moving away from home and having to do everything for yourself - it can be a massive shock. I remember my parents dropping me at halls and driving off into the distance - I stood thinking WTF have I done!!

You will find it a piece of piss - honestly. I averaged between 10-15 hours a week of lectures and seminars. So it's easy enough to do full time work around doing a degree, except maybe science. A lot of science work is lab based, so you can't escape having to put the hours in at the lab.

If you really are concerned about age, look at doing an Open University Degree?

If I was 18 again I would have chosen to do Architecture - Hindsight eh!
