The contrast in the opening performance from last season to this was stark.
At the Etihad newcastle were pitiful last august in a display they could rightly be ashamed of.
On Sunday they could walk off the st james park pitch, beaten again, but this time with heads held high as they had given everything.
2 outstanding performances from the willing Colback and the excellent Cabella must give Geordies a sense that finally they are heading in the right direction and have found a suitable replacement for the guile and craft of Cabaye.
Clearly it's not the finished article as a fairly slow and at times static back 4 would attest to but if they can play with that vibrancy regularly then St James Park will become a really difficult away trip once again.
The new lad upfront Rivière was willing enough but seems like he will be a foil for a goal scorer in a front 2 rather than looking like the new Shearer and it felt like Newcastle were playing with their own version of a false no 9 at times so that would be the big question that needs answering, where are the goals going to come from?
I'd like to see John Guidetti at st james Pk,I think that would be a really good move for both parties.
He's possibly just what you need maybe on an initial loan until the jan window?

They can keep guidetti. We need a proven striker. We already have gambles in the forward positions, we can't risk another one.

Aroze Perez looked very good to me when he came on, only kompanys world class block stopped him scoring.

possible this lad could be a unearthed gem.

Was it just be who watched the game on Sunday at got a feeling of de ja vu about home games against Manchester City. Also got to agree with the OP about Riviere but we aren't going to be playing teams as good as Manchester City every week.

I don't often applaud the opposition but I did when Kompany made that tackle, it was outstanding.

No I did as well. Similar story to their last 2-3 visits. Played well and maybe deserved something but after giving it a go for 70-80 mins we run out of steam and are caught in the break. Seen it coming a mile off.

We need to show more quality in the box. You can get at City at times but it's vital you take your chances because they will take theirs more often than not.
