Hello District, how's you? Tricky starting match for us yesterday but even trickier for you I think.

Just watching the replay of the penalty. Having seen it again, it appears that the linesman was the one who told Foy that it was a red card. Roses's reaction to the linesman appeared telling.

Just watched Gullit on MOTD assure me that it was a valid red card. The guy's a prat and I imagine he was a bit of a prat as a manager too.

I think he was trying to quote, what he saw, as the letter of the law, Lenny. The argument seems to be whether it was a clear goal scoring opportunity. In my view, and both Shearer & Lineker's, it wasn't.

It's easy to consider any one-off decision and conclude one thing or another (even though wrongly!) The most important consideration however is the one that the media constantly avoid, which is this decision would not be given against certain teams, and/or different referees would give different decisions. Please show me evidence of where such a decision went against Liverpool, Chelsea or the Manchesters, particularly at home. All this adds up at the end of the season. There is no "it all evens out over the season" that the pundits are so fond of trotting out. We suffered some notable bad decisions last year in the box, that rescinding cards afterwards does not repair. I know we got away with it yesterday but that is an exception. Normally that is a game changing decision that ruins the entertainment for people paying a fortune to watch it.

I'm not sure what else could have been expected. If you put your hands up in the box and stop a shot, you walk.

The majority of the blame sits with Naughton.

Lenny, Gullit was a good player and went onto manage Newcastle where he promised"Sexy football" which did not materialize so yes you are right.

Biggest shock of the day was Shearer saying he didn't think it was a red. I thought he was sure to side with the ref on that one. Gullit really hates us though, doesn't he? It wouldn't feel right if Lawro and Hansen weren't replaced properly on MOTD so I look forward to strongly disagreeing with him every weekend :D

Nemesis acted with Noble missing the penalty.
The club should appeal for the red card to be rescinded.
I think I saw a stat somewhere that stated Spurs have had the most red cards rescinded
on appeal. If true, someone at the club should be beating the PL ref dept to within an inch
of their lives.

Its frustrating to think that if Tyler Blackett, the Manchester United CB debutant, had put in Eric Dier's performance then he would have been praised to the hilt on MOTD. Its hard to really care what the MOTD pundits say because its often just so much hot air, but it would be nice to at least see coverage and treated equally.

The longer Dier can go unnoticed by the mainstream media, the better in my opinion.

:D :D :D

What a fantastic result, especially baring in mind the circumstances. Absolutely loved the day out, apart from having to walk too and from Forest Gate station to Upton Park!!!

The red was so harsh, a penalty fair enough but sending the lad off, last man or not was a joke. Common sense was needed there, when you're less than a yard away and a ball is being volleyed in your direction is a body's natural reaction to have arms raised. The linesman was the one that made the decision but with Foy in charge he doesn't need much convincing to give a s**t decision against us, the linesman got a ton of stick including a hot dog thrown at him by my cousin <laugh> (yes, I know it's childish and we did have a go at him for doing it at the time, but looking back now it was pretty comical, it cost him £4 and he only had two bites!), he then capped his day off by ripping his shorts, a good 10 inch split down the back giving him good air conditioning <laugh>.

Dier was absolutely fantastic, excluding the goal he put in a superb, committed performance and if he continues like that, not only can we save £20m on Musacchio but Vertonghen may have his new CB partner.

Capoue and Bentaleb were also great, both worked their arses off for the side. I was surprised Holtby didn't start as he's been the standout performer in the pre-season and when he came on, along with Townsend and Kane (great subs by Poch), helped changed the flow of the game.

Lamela worked really hard - perhaps tried too hard - but didn't have much of a cutting edge, I think with more time he'll be superb.

Kaboul unfortunately was very poor, twice he was caught in possession and we were lucky West Ham didn't capitalise.

Hugo's 87th minute save is just a reminder of what a superb keeper he is and we're extremely lucky to have him.

There were two moments that made yesterday even better. Once they got the penalty, the Hammers started singing "It's happening again, it's happening again..." and then when the penalty was put wide there was a stunned silence amongst them while we celebrated as if we scored.
Then as the dying moments were approaching, the w**kers started sarcastically singing to us "0-0, in your cup final" and then Dier goes and breaks through and scores. Made it so, so sweet. We then chanted "Normal service is resumed!".

Such an important victory on a number of levels, a win on the first day is always great, a win in Poch's first game in charge, a revenge-win for the defeats last summer and a massive confidence booster due to it being a fierce London derby. Sets us up nicely for QPR.

Really looking forward to this season, the team is developing and learning Poch's philosophy but once they get a firm grip on things, we're going to be a real dark horse to have a great season.

COYS!!!

Fantastic Derby win!!!!!
What a start to the new prem season...
Well done Eric Dier, cb/fb and at the end world class striker
Hahaha
All u spurs fans, enjoy your weekend!!!
Get in there
What a start

Nice to see a player who understands the fans' perspective. Great picture, too.

The red card was a bit of a joke, in my opinion. I can understand a ref giving that, despite it not being a shot on target, but Foy's positioning was horrible and he couldn't see what happened.
He clearly didn't know whether he was doing the right thing either, as he wandered off to check with his linesman.
Why do we still have to put up with him?

The goal was a fantastic bit of play from both Dier and Kane. Superb ball and a lovely touch and finish.
Fat Sam looked like he was going to do himself an injury at the end and in the post-match interview. Shame! <laugh>

Won't happen. One game for England and they'll all be saying how he needs to join "a Champions League team", then linking him with Man Utd.
Probably doesn't help that their defence is looking a little lacking at the moment.

Danny Rose?! <laugh>
I guess we can be thankful that Foy didn't pull a Marriner and send off the wrong player, then!

Seriously, who thought it was a wise use of the airtime to let Gullit stick the boot in to Eriksen and Lamela without actually having anything to stick the boot in about? The fact he was saying Eriksen was on the right and Lamela through the middle, even though anyone watching the game would've seen that wasn't the case, made him look like an ignorant bellend.

I really enjoyed PNP's and SOS's posts. Not to mention the game!

A lot of people, including me, said that unfortunately, the only thing that mattered in this game was the result. The result was fantastic, and IMO it was the only thing that mattered.

I actually thought we looked like total crap before the red card, but, again, it's not a surprise with a team trying to learn a new system and another team determined to break up that system. I'm a huge fan of Eriksen but I thought he might have been the main culprit, trying much too hard to make things happen through the middle when he needed to play the easier pass and get the ball wide at least occasionally. I think the problem will be solved when he and Pochettino have their next talk. Lamela was hardly brilliant but he showed a strength and tenacity he didn't have last year, and tends to make me think he'll continue to do well, as he did in the preseason. He drew the first of the two yellow cards on whats-his-name, and Ade drew the second, so it's not as if they didn't make meaningful contributions.

The criticism of Kaboul has been too harsh, IMO--though maybe what I mean is that while there was a fair amount to criticize, he hasn't gotten nearly enough praise for controlling the air space in front of our goal. If he hadn't, I thought West Ham could easily have gotten at least one goal.

The less said about our play, and style of play, the better. I'll be concerned if we don't look at least fairly good against QPR. This game never looked like a fair test.

As to the quality of our players: the biggest chronic problem Spurs have isn't player quality, it's that we don't do what anyone prefers, which is to try and make them comfortable by giving them a steady job. Look how many goals and assists Gylfi had before we started effing with his head by bringing him on here and there, and look at him scoring the moment he has a regular job back. If someone can't do the job, sack him. But if you want to play him, try to make him comfortable and his performance will improve.

Capoue and Bentaleb were good, I agree. Holtby made a good case for a place in the starting lineup. As did Kane.

Oh, and lots of credit to Pochettino, who may not have gotten his system to take in the first game under difficult circumstances, but did show resolve in keeping attackers on after the red card. That saved the game, and excellent (and, the case of Kane, unexpected) subbing won it. I see why Mancini said Pochettino is good under pressure. He showed a really cool head yesterday, which certainly comes in handy at WHL.
