Swansea Lukasz Fabianski: The summer signing from Arsenal was unflappable at the back, collecting pretty much every cross that was pinged in from out wide. (8/10) Angel Rangel: Was part of a Swansea defence that acted solidly as a unit. United did not have too much joy down the left due to his disciplined approach. (7/10) Ashley Williams: A rock at the back for the visitors, Williams headed and kicked everything away. Not only that, but the centre-back also showed great leadership skills by keeping his teammates constantly on their toes. (9/10) Jordi Amat: Working well alongside Williams, Amat can take equal credit for helping to keep United at bay thanks to an assured display. (8/10) Neil Taylor: Struggled to keep a hold of Januzaj when the winger came on. Garry Monk saw that Taylor was finding things difficult and replaced him early in the second half. (6/10) Nathan Dyer: Usually a good source of running out wide, Dyer had something of a off-day as Swansea put most of their energy into their defensive duties. (7/10) Jonjo Shelvey: A typically-robust afternoon for Shelvey, who mixed it up with the United midfield. Did not do too much from an attacking sense, but he frequently set his teammates away at the other end. (7/10) Ki Sung-yeung: Took his goal well, though United will be annoyed that he was afforded plenty of space in the edge of the box. That aside, the Korean was all stamina and dynamic runs from deep. (7/10) Gylfi Sigurdsson: Gave Swansea some much-needed creativity, sitting in just behind Bony and pulling the strings in the final third. You get the feeling that his return to the club will be a success. (7/10) Wayne Routledge: Never stopped running for his team at both ends of the pitch. Bony often cut a lone figure up front, but Routledge did his best to give the Ivorian some support up top. (8/10) Wilfried Bony: Despite having little to work with, the striker made sure that the United defence never took their eye off him. He would have known before the match that he would not have much service, but that did not stop him from working his socks off. (7/10) Substitutes Dwight Tiendalli: Replaced Taylor at the start of the second half and did a better job at stifling Januzaj. (7/10) Bafetimbi Gomis: Caused some relative chaos when he came off the bench, running at the United defence and using his big frame to win the ball for his side. (7/10) Jefferson Montero: Played a key part in Swansea's winner, crossing the ball into Routledge before Sigurdsson fired in. Not a bad way to start your career in the Premier League. (7/10)
How does "if we don't beat Burnley it'll all have been for nothing." work out then? We'd still have 3 more points than if we hadn't beaten Manure. And how is "if we don't beat Burnley it'll all have been for nothing" a historical fact.?
Just so we're clear - Monk was tactically brilliant today - spot on with subs too. Best player for me - Ki, who showed what he can do and had a defensive side to his game today
yay those of us who had little faith. what a great start to monks career, we could not ask for better....top of the league...
That's better. No terrible things that may, or may not, happen in the future. Carpe Diem and all that.
Thanks bullet - I've been saying the same thing. We need to keep this up but it's a fab win nonetheless and Monk should enjoy it.
Not a bad day out My OPINION Fabianski – 8 (Did everything well commanded his 6 apart from their goal which he might have done more for but that would be nit picking. A lot more confident with him in goal. Distribution also good. Taylor – 6 A few good touches and a couple of decent tackles. Positional play wasn’t awful but not good, tracking back another weakness. The main concern must be his wild challenges which already have him marked as a bit of a liability. Will he happy at the substitution? Ash – 9 MoM. Last season he often went missing and needed Chico help him out but today he was as good as he’s ever been. Amat – 7.5 Solid. Did everything required. A lot of talk about Bartley or Amat but no one can complain he got the nod. Against a team not renowned for the aerial bombardments Amat offered more on the floor and a clear head. When Fernandez comes Amat can feel a bit hard done by if he’s back on the bench. Rangel – 7.5 Solid. Did everything required. Didn’t go forward as often as we are used to but that was probably down to the game plan. Dyer – 6 Did very little to get into the game but once again made an important contribution with his head for the first goal. He didn’t get the best service and was heavily marked. Shelvey – 6 Not a good game from the big man. Passing suspect with too many failing to find his many. The plus was he and Ki seemed to work well together. Ki -7.5 Superbly taken goal. Composed but did lose the ball and misplace passes. The combination of Ki and Shelvey was effective and may improve but Shelvey need to tighten up. Sigurdsson – 8.5 Did a lot really well, a few flutters but an assist and a goal. Any other day MoM. Rutledge – 7.5 Didn’t give up worked hard in attack and defense. Did a lot of work to make space off the ball. Great assist! Bony – 7 Didn’t look up to form but played a huge part in both goals – acting as a brick wall for the first and taking a quick free kick that led to the second. Tiendalli – 7 (for him time on the pitch) assured and defended against an improved Man U in the second half. Montero - 7 (for him time on the pitch) Important part in the second goal, Busy but pretty much contained by Jones. Gomis – 7 (for him time on the pitch) Lively and strong, could start against Burnley … or will we go 4 4 2 against the less fancied sides? Monk – 9 Got it right, especially the substitutions; that said they were calling out to be made; Taylor, Dyer and Bony were the obvious candidates but the timing of the Taylor hook was impressive. Quite often when Swans play well other teams lose to us and the other teams are poor. It has to be accepted that apart from 20 second half minute Man Utd were quite awful. ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning.’ Even if tongue in cheek the chant summed up the United performance as much as the Swansea win.
Williams was a man on a mission today , best gamein a long time forhim ... very pleasently surprised at the outcome . Was a combination of playing well and United stinking the place up ..couldnt happen to a nicer team ...lol
Honest assessment Bob but as always we agree to disagree on Ki. Was MOM for me and was excellent today. I think your criticism of him (understandably) is his lack of a defensive mindset but it looks like Monk got that sorted out with him today. Compared to other players he gave the ball away less frequently imo and as you say took his goal well. As I hope Monk continues to prove me wrong I hope Ki does the same for others.
Ki was awesome today and showed his true colours but Sigs was my MOM with Ash, i cant split the two. i was glad when monk took off Taylor as we looked better after that. our defence stood firm and had their share of deserved luck and we held on to a famous win that will go into the hall of fame in the history of famous wins..totally unexpected and deserved...
Palce 1-0 up, could there be another shock result on the cards!! Oh yeah we are still top of the league
