Luis could play fast or slow it down. Problem is nobody else knew how to play a slow game, hence we struggled against parked buses.

I have no doubt that we can play a very good fast game even without Luis (though I'd never say he slowed us down) - what I'm yet to be convinced by is the resourcefulness of BR's systems.

If an opponent hasn't done their homework and wants to dilly dally with a high line, we could still tear their arse open via Coutinho's through balls and the new SAS's pace. However, if they sit back and defend as a unit or isolate Coutinho and cut off supply to Sterling and frustrate Sturridge - we'd probably struggle more than last season when with Suarez's help we somehow always found a way to the goal.

    Brendans diary since joining Liverpool.

Told the board and all the players about my 50 page dosier on how to play. Keep the ball and pass it among yourselves as often as possilble, if the opposition have the ball try to win it back as soon as you can then pass it some more, that should worry them (Barcalona do it so i know it works).
This didn`t seem to work as well as it did on paper (or for Barca) and some of the more experienced players were whinging a bit.
At the start of last season, after a big bust up in the dressing room i lost it and said to them all "**** it, go out and play your own game", it worked <yikes>. My motivational skills are now ledgendary so i think this season i will go with the same approach and see what happens.

BR's style of play was never plodding tiki taka to begin with. See his Swansea teams ... quite exhilarating high tempo attacking football. Yes, he went more direct in our last season to adapt to our players' best attributes. A change of pitch if you will, but same voice. Brendan's swashbuckling style is quite stubborn - and that's not necessarily a great thing as it can border on naive occasionally.

Benitez, Van Gaal and Mourinho are masters of adaption for instance, preparing to greater extents for neutralising rather than creating, whilst Ancelotti never forgot his organised Italian defensive schemes despite his attack-minded flourishes. Guardiola and Klopp are uncompromising in their attacking philosophies like Brendan and indeed their systems splutter too if the players are not wound up to perform at their physical peaks. The latter requirement is helped by the fact that they all seem to be good motivators.
