Opinion, but I find that when valuing players, supporters know best. Especially for someone like Welbeck that they don't rate highly. Reckons 16-18 would be needed. I could see it being something like 15-16.

if YOU had your way, no one would ever leave the club, Windass would be there with his Zimmer.

As above...Long may have been our best striker(Jelavic once settled for me) but thats doesnt mean hes better than what we can get for the 12mill and 45k p/w were left with, not to mention what was left in the kitty before hand..quite the opposite i think.

Bruce finally speaks out about selling Long..

"We'd not been looking to sell Shane but it's a fantastic offer and we've decided to accept it," Bruce told the Mail.

"The challenge is always to become bigger and better and this money will be put towards strengthening again.

"Whether you are Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, everyone in football has got their price."

The Mail has learnt Southampton first declared an interest in Long on Friday of last week.

An initial bid of £7m was immediately dismissed but that rose to £9m over the weekend and quickly escalated to the £12.5m offer accepted by City on Tuesday night.

    People getting dazzled by welbeck...........

Must be the 14m reported fee orrrr
Hes an england international surely that makes him good <whistle> Orrrrrr
    He plays for man utd

Hes a headless chicken, no end product, inconsistent finisher and infuriating when he trys and takes 3,4 players on when he has an easy option for a pass. Alot of money for somebody who doesnt score goals, we need a goalscorer And theres a much more natural goalscorer in the united reserves champing at the bit for first team football scored two on his debut, has just scored all 4 goals in uniteds senior cup final win against man city, im pretty sure he,l flourish under van gaal and be given the 4th striker spot much rather take him on a season long loan than the unproven goal scorer that welbeck is, id say welbeck is a like for like with jelavic does the donkey work up top not a partner for him.

Lacazette from lyon who newcastle are interested in nip in and steal him would be a quality signing

Man utd not gonna spend time and good money getting Wilson ready for the big time then just sell him the moment he starts looking good...whats 8-10mill to MU anyway?...think we`ll see Wilson given a chance this season before deciding next

He got 9 goals in 25 appearances for United last season, that's more than any of our strikers got. He's a highly rated striker who we know can deliver the goods, that's why his price tag is so high.

And having lost our first choice striker, we aren't going to replace him with James Wilson, who's played one game for United and while he looked good, is totally unproven and an enourmous risk.

What utter nonsense, he scored 9 Premier League goals in 25 games last season, 10 of those appearances were off the bench and in many of the games he played out wide. He also scored 1 in the Champions League and 3 for England. He's in a completely different class to any other striker we've ever had, it's just a pity he won't sign for us.

Very narrow minded if you think he,l continue with 9 goals in 25 games here looooool

    What utter tripe

And a loan deal for wilson would be good business would score more than welbeck

    128 appearances 28 goals

    14m? No thanks

Interesting to read a bid from Southampton was received on Friday. Must have been after the game on Thursday night ?
Does anyone know who the Southampton scout around here is?
I'm not reading too much into this Danny Welbeck story. Simply because if City were genuinely interested we would be the last to know.
So is it a story fed out by Welbecks agent to alert other clubs he is up for sale? Or on the other hand in a similar way is it a way of letting the new Man Utd manager know that Welbeck is not happy?
Or are we using Welbeck to alert another player we are interested in (and maybe talking too) that we,as a club, are serious in attracting top players?
Morale of the story? Don't believe everything you read in the papers.

Haha - people slating Welbeck as a signing.

What nonsense - he'd be the best striker we've ever had by some distance - I also don't think we'll get him although I'd say a loan isn't out of the question for a few million

The #hcafc fans who don't think Danny Welbeck is good enough, probably don't remember when Colin Alcide got lost in Boothferry Kwik Save.

Danny Welbeck would be a great signing. Can't beleive anyone is saying otherwise. Unfortunately that is why I think he (and the likes of Hernandez & Remy) won't come here. I've been surprised before with signing of Huddlestone but I think this is another step up. I'll be delighted to be proven wrong but feel Bruce's comments reported this morning back this up too. I think we may well take a view on the squad as a whole and look at what we have got up front already (which in my opinion is already good) and take a more of a speculative punt on someone younger, from abroad or even a good quality loan whilst spending the majority of the money received from Long in the areas in defence and centre midfield where in my opinion we are still weaker. Of course I've been wrong before.

For a team in the prem who want a striker who scores goals i dont think welbecks good enough for 14m

Big difference to alcide getting lost when we were in the doldrums

Okay 14m fee and aint welbeck on 70k a week so lets sling that financial package together and work out if hes worth it for the lack of goals he'd provide

We need a goal scorer a regular goal scorer a proper number 9 poacher type more in the hernandez mould than the wide playing doesnt score too many welbeck

Wellbeck is currently on the same wage as Long was, though we'd no doubt have to up that to tempt him to us.

And Wellbeck was forced to play out wide, it's quite obviously not his best position, he's excellent when played in the middle.
