please log in to view this image West Ham United host Tottenham Hotspur at Upton Park on Saturday 16th August 2014 KO 15:00, in the opening round of 2014-15 Premier League season. The Hammers finished last season in 13th place on 40 points while Spurs finished 6th on 69 points. This will be the 245th time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came in the Thames and Medway League in September 1898 when West Ham were known as Thames Ironworks. That game at Northumberland Park resulted in a 3-0 home win for Spurs. Thames Ironworks won the return fixture 2-1 at the Memorial Grounds in East Ham. The teams met again in the Southern League the next season with Spurs running out 7-0 winners at Northumberland Park and the return fixture ending in a 0-0 draw at the Memorial Grounds. The 1900-01 season saw Thames Ironworks become West Ham United and the Hammers and Spurs played each other in both the Southern League and the Western League. By now, Spurs had moved into their new ground at White Hart Lane but it would be another four years before West Ham moved to their current home at Upton Park (or more correctly, the Boleyn Ground). Spurs won three of the four matches played that season against West Ham with the remaining game being drawn. Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United continued to meet in both Leagues up to season 1907-08, when Spurs switched to the Football League. The teams didn't play any more competitive matches against each other until after the First World War. During the War, several games were played in the various competitions organised to maintain the morale of the public. Spurs beat West Ham 3-0 in the first FA Cup match played between the teams in February 1920. To date, the clubs have played against each other together 11 times in the competition with Spurs winning 6 games to West Ham's 3 and 2 drawn games. The first Football League meetings came in the Second Division in season 1919-20 with West Ham winning 2-1 at Upton Park and Spurs winning 2-0 at White Hart Lane. Spurs regained their top flight status that season, which had been taken away in very contraversial circumstances. Spurs and West Ham played their first match in the Top Flight of English Football in February 1924 with the Hammers drawing 0-0 at the Lane but winning the return leg at Upton Park 1-0. The clubs met for another four seasons in Division One from 1924-25 to 1927-28. From 1932-33 until the outbreak of World War Two, the clubs met in the Second Division. During the Second World War, Spurs and West Ham played 20 games which often featured 'guest players' as many of the club's regular footballers were called away on National Service. Regular football resumed in season 1946-47 and the teams played four seasons in Division Two before Spurs won the title in 1949-50 and were promoted to Division One, where they won the first of their two League Championships the next season. West Ham United were themselves promoted to the First Division for the 1959-60 season and they enjoyed a lengthy spell in the Top Flight which lasted until 1978. West Ham United beat Spurs in the first Football League Cup meeting in 1966 and to date the clubs have met 7 times in the competition with Spurs winning three games, West Ham two games and two games drawn. Spurs were founder-members of the Premier League in season 1992-93 and have been ever present in the competition. West Ham won promotion to the Premier League for the 1993-94 season and lost to Spurs 3-1 at Upton Park that season. The Hammers beat Spurs 4-1 in the return match at the Lane. West Ham won the 2010-11 match in September at Upton Park 1-0 with a Frederic Piquionne goal while the game at White Hart Lane in March 2011 finished in a goalless draw. The Hammers were relegated at the end of that season finishing bottom on 33 points. The match at White Hart Lane in November 2012 resulted in a 3-1 win for Spurs with Jermain Defoe scoring just before half-time and adding a second after 64 minutes after Gareth Bale had put Spurs 2-0 ahead after 58 minutes. The Hamers goal came from on-loan Andy Carroll. The game at Upton Park in February 2013 was won 3-2 by Spurs. Gareth Bale put Spurs ahead after 13 minutes but an Andy Carroll penalty levelled things up after 25 minutes. Joe Cole put the Hammers ahead after 58 minutes before Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the equaliser after 76 minutes. The game looked like ending as a draw until Bale scored a second stunning 90th minute goal. West Ham had a memorable 3-0 win at White Hart Lane in October 2013. Winston Reid opened the scoring in the 66th minute before Ricardo Vaz Te struck six minutes later and Ravel Morrison added a third ten minutes from time.The clubs met at the Lane in the 5th Round of the Football League Cup in December 2013 with West Ham progressing to the Quarter Finals after a 2-1 win. Emmanuel Adebayor put Spurs ahead after 67 minutes but late goals from Matt Jarvis and Modibo Maiga secured the victory. West Ham completed a 3rd win over Spurs last season with a 2-0 win at Upton Park in May with Harry Kane scoring an own goal & Stewart Downing scoring. To date, there have been 36 matches played in the Premier League with Spurs winning 17, West Ham winning 12 and 7 matches drawn. The clubs have met in two foreign venues, firstly on tour in the United States in May 1969 where Spurs beat West Ham 2-1 in Baltimore, USA and more recently in the Barclays Asia Trophy in July 2009 in Beijing, China with Spurs winning 1-0. Whoop Whoop! Welcome back THFC6061! Buzzing for this, start of the season AND it's against that lot. I'm feeling confident, the players should be well up for this and owe the fans after last season's horror shows. If you're looking to go for a few beers pre-game, J8S, me and my lot and I know a few yids will be at the Railway Inn just off of Liverpool Street . Last season was my first time to Upton Park for a match, we got escorted to the ground by the police last season, though I'm probably not going to be waiting for them this time, ended up missing kick off by 2 mins, which even though is a minimal amount, I wasn't too happy with. Held us up on the train "due to potential crowd violence" when there were barely any West Ham around and then waited for another 10 minutes outside the station for the riot police to escort us to the stadium, walking at a bloody snail's pace!
SoS It's a nightmare getting there! We normally go to canary wharf before West Ham, DLR to Stratford and bus in from there. Completely misses any idiots looking for a scrap and avoids the need to get a police escort.
Yeah the escort was a nightmare, I can understand the need to supervise us but they walked at a ridiculous pace and the hold ups were silly and un-needed precautions. I could understand if West Ham were standing around with a clear intention of a row but the station was pretty much empty, there were more Spurs on the train and just as many police yet they're holding us back due to "signs of a potential crowd trouble incident". I actually know where it kicked off (which was after the game) and it was well away from the station. "Hooligans" don't meet at the obvious areas any more, the quicker the police realise this the better, that way people that actually just want to get to the ground before kick off without hassle can do.
Despite all of the potential for trouble, West Ham have put tickets on general sale. Can't see that causing any problems. Welcome back, 6061. Always nice to see these top quality match threads.
We always avoid the police escorts where ever we go, as you say they walk at a ridiculously slow pace and it takes ages to get anywhere! I got caught up in one when we played PSV away a few years back, the Dutch police were using "snatch squads" to steam into us and nab anyone they thought was a hooligan! Loads were pulled out! With West Ham there's always a wannabe thug who wants to try and throw punches at Spurs fans. No doubt we've got a few younger fans who are the same when Arsenal or Chelsea visit the lane. The local plod must realise that any meets between the "firms" is going to happen well away from the ground and either well before or after!

Forced to use IE8 at work and can't upgrade or download other browser.
