Celtic fans should feel ashamed if Legia lose appeal, says Dziekanowski

DARIUSZ DZIEKANOWSKI has launched a blistering assault on his former club Celtic by branding them "the laughing stock of world football" and insisting they will only go on to shame themselves on the field again should they be given the green light to remain in the Champions League.

Dziekanowski, who works as a UEFA delegate, has been appalled by the refusal of the Parkhead management to indulge in any form of dialogue with Legia Warsaw ahead of this morning's appeal against the Polish club being effectively expelled from European football's premier competition for fielding a suspended player.

Legia believed their midfielder Bartosz Bereszynski had served a three-game suspension before playing the final four minutes of their 2-0 win over the SPFL Premiership titleholders at Murrayfield, a victory which completed a comfortable 6-1 aggregate victory, but it later transpired that he had not been included in their registered 25-man squad for the club's first qualifying round tie with St Patrick's Athletic of the Republic of Ireland.

Legia head to UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, in the knowledge they have little chance of overturning the governing body's decision that they had to forfeit the second leg by a 3-0 scoreline, meaning Celtic went through on away goals after a 4-4 draw.

However, they have been rallying support throughout the world of football through a well-executed internet and social media campaign and claim to have the backing of a number of high-profile individuals such as Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich and the retired Portuguese internationalist Deco, who was part of the FC Porto side that defeated Celtic in the 2003 UEFA Cup final.

Dziekanowski used his weekly column in the Polish sports news*paper, Przeglad Sportowy, to tear a strip off his former club as a result of their refusal to respond to Legia's demands for a meeting to discuss alternative means of settling the controversial tie, such as a play-off.

He believes the Glasgow club have tarnished their reputation forever and that they will struggle to beat NK Maribor of Slovenia in the qualifying play-off round. Should Ronny Deila's side get through, Dziekanowski predicts that they will be nothing other than cannon fodder for better sides in the group stage.

"This is not the Celtic I know," stated Dziekanowski. "Celtic was known for years as a club that always promoted fair play. I remember from my time how the fans reacted when a player went down injured and their rival did not want to kick the ball out. When someone tried to dive, the fans whistled and booed. I am sure Celtic supporters feel ashamed and embarrassed of how their club has reacted. They know that this does not bring any pride."

"It is not Legia that are the laughing stock of world football, but Celtic. They decided to wash their hands of this and put their heads in the sand. I never expected such an attitude. I thought they could talk to Legia and find a solution. If they had not taken this advantage, it would have been better for Celtic. The whole world would have appreciated their sporting behaviour. Secondly, I doubt they will be able to beat Maribor. It will be very difficult for them. If they qualify, they will only be points providers for the other teams."

POLISH FA chief Zbigniew Boniek has branded Legia Warsaw incompetent – as fresh evidence from key figure Bartosz Bereszynski last night blew a gaping hole in his club’s appeal to UEFA.

Bereszynski’s three-minute appearance as a sub against Celtic at Murrayfield led to the Scottish champions’ controversial reinstatement to the Champions League.

Legia’s failure to register the defender for the previous round against St Patrick’s meant he was technically still banned for the ties against Ronny Deila’s team.

And, in a stunning new twist, Record Sport understands Bereszynski raised the suspension issue with Legia hierarchy BEFORE the game.

Polish sources have revealed Warsaw keeper Dusan Kuciak tipped his team-mate off to a potential problem before the Murrayfield clash but that Bereszynski was assured by the club he was clear to play.

UEFA will hear Legia’s appeal against expulsion in Nyon this morning but the new calamity surrounding their blunder provides damning evidence.

Bereszynski said: “I will not confirm or deny this information as these are matters which will stay within club walls. Who has to know at the club knows.”

But when asked to confirm the story involving Kuciak, who had encountered a similar case during his spell with Romanians Vaslui, Bereszynski said: “I was convinced the suspension was completed but I can confirm Dusan was first to react.

“He told me there had been a similar situation in Vaslui and I should check it out. Then I started to get interested.”

Bereszynksi’s admission does not look good for the Poles and their own FA chief has also sank the boot in.

Boniek has been critical of Celtic’s refusal to have dialogue but insisted Legia only have themselves to blame.

He said: “The guilt does not lie with UEFA or Celtic but with Legia. The people who are responsible for it have turned out to be completely incompetent. As the head of the Polish FA I would always try to help Legia or any other Polish team.

“I called, I asked, I got strongly involved but the provisions for which Legia were punished left no doubt. It had to be a walkover.

“Could Celtic have behaved differently? I know what I would have done but 95 per cent of clubs are not willing to give up such an opportunity.

“I played in a European Cup Final where 38 people were killed and I was the only player who gave my $100,000 win bonus to the families of the victims but everyone has a different mentality.

“It is clearly written that playing a suspended player means a forfeit. Someone at Legia has made a mistake you should not commit.”

Bereszynski also admitted he had no gripe with Celtic and said: “The fault in this whole affair is not with Celtic, just us.

“This is today’s football. If you are not vigilant at every step you’re out of the game.”

Covering up 50 years of child abuse by the Lisbon Lizards doesn't faze them, winning 3 tainted titles is celebrated by them, so replacing a team that skelped them 6-1 on aggregate will be potatoes off a Plastic Paddy's back.

It opens at 10am on those days too. I used to shag a bird from Nyon when I lived in Geneva.

    I don't understand it.

If Celtic get beyond Maribor, every team in the Premiership will get an extra £200k - £250k.

Don't understand why the Huns would be beeling about tha...oh, right, aye.
