    Thought I'd share....

    http://howaythetoon.co.uk/newcastle-united-transfers-mike-ashley/

In 2007, Mike Ashley purchased the combined stakes of John Hall and Douglas Hall, effectively giving him ownership of Newcastle United. Since that time, and the appointment of Alan Pardew, Mike Ashley has continued to be accused of asset stripping the club to make a profit. Backers of Mike Ashley, few though they are, continue to push that the club is now on an even keel. Mike Ashley detractors, who seem to be in the majority, argue that if the club would spend more money on players and do more than just balance the books, the club could push for top five, or even higher.

One of the questions that remains to be answered is just how much has Mike Ashley profited or lost from player transfers alone? The only way to answer that question, one way or the other, is to look historically at the club’s transfers under Mike Ashley’s tenure. The club would argue that agent fees and other miscellaneous fees should be included, but since that information hasn’t been made public, all I can go on is the transfer fee itself.

Also, I have not included loan transfers. This list contains permanent transfers only.

For what it’s worth, Mike Ashley has a current net worth of £3.75 Billion.

    Profit / Loss 2014 – 2015 Season so far: £23.5 Million Loss

    Overall Season Transfer Fees Combined
So, let’s take a look at the overall profit and loss from the seasons combined:

    2008 – 2009 Season: £6.85 Million Profit
    2009 – 2010 Season: £20.75 Million Profit
    2010 – 2011 Season: £23 Million Profit
    2011 – 2012 Season: £8.85 Million Loss
    2012 – 2013 Season: £14.65 Million Loss
    2013 – 2014 Season: £20.5 Million Profit
    2014 – 2015 Season so far: £23.5 Million Loss

When you combine the profit / loss for each season, it looks like we end up with Mike Ashley making a total profit from transfer fees of £24.1 Million.

Given the owner’s business model of buying players with potential, and then selling them off once the club receives an offer that meets their valuation, the total profit amount shouldn’t come as a surprise. As supporters of this football club, we should expect that this pattern will continue for the foreseeable future, as long as Mr. Ashley is at the helm.

Another, realistic, way of looking at that £24m profit is that we sold Andy Carroll for an obscene amount. Take that transfer out and more has been spent than made on transfers.

I don't deny that we did.
Let's say I spent good money on buying players, say £100m, then I could be considered to be investing in the team.
If someone then came along and offered me £110m for Ameobi am I then a pocket lining parasite as I've actually made £10m?

We'd all love a sugar daddy but we all know Mike ain't that. We just have to accept things the way they are. Good to have the figures all in one place though ACS!

The only problem with looking at these figures is that they are only one part of the full equation.

To see if MA is milking the Club or not it's necessary to look at all the figures and see what the profit/loss is for each year and then the full period.

I would add that I'm not overly obsessed, like some, with having to spend millions and millions on new players just to be able to say we've spent millions and millions on new players. I'm more concerned about the quality of the players bought and if we can pick up Cabaye type purchases then all the better. For me MA is owed a bundle of money even taking the free advertising into account and is perfectly entitled to claim some back. My gripe on that score is that he has in the past appeared to do that to the detriment of the team which is short term thinking and inappropriate.

Even if we did have access to the accounts, which we eventually will, we still probably wouldn't know the real position thanks to creative accountants.

Bottom line for me is that MA could be a better owner but there are a lot of worse ones out there. Ask Leeds, Portsmouth et al.

I suspect that once you take into account agents fees, signing on fees and the like there has been no profit from that whole list but it is fair to say we aren't losing money in the market like pretty much every other team in the league. I've not averse to the idea of breaking even at all but I do wonder where the tv money and gate receipts goes - I'd like to think it was into the academy and encouraging local talent but that hasn't really worked for a while...

It's amazing how consistently we've bought bad defenders.

Wages eat up a vast amount of the revenue, on 2012/13 accounts we were one of the better ones only spending 64% of all revenue on wages, PL average 70%, also don't forget that the bigger the money gets the more the players want, I also hate to think how much the stadium costs each week to run along with the training facilities, of course local and national government take a nice slice of the pie through things such as business rates, VAT and corporation tax which you only pay if you make a profit. I would also wonder at how much PRS charge them for playing recorded music around the stadium, we have to pay this in the hotel and pub industry even if its just a tv in a bar, they base this on how many seats we have in a bar area, I've worked places where this bill is upwards of £2500 in a not particulary big place but with lots of seats. There are tons of add on charges when you are running a business that add up, god knows what the electricty bill must be especially when you get hit with an additional climate change levy of 5% on top of 20% vat. It all adds up.
