I agree LTL . It happens so fast , but why was he warning the others instead of getting to safety ! Makes it all the more tragic .

He wasn't warning others. From what I've seen, it looks like he was gesticulating at Stewart himself, he was having a go at him for taking him out the previous lap. Of course, he got too close to Stewart and paid the price.

I thought Stewart was the car behind the car behind ( if that makes sense ) . So if he was gesticulating , it was towards the wrong driver .

Which in the harshest sense makes it even more daft really - but then he was 20, and perhaps a little hot-headed. Either way, a tragedy of course.

What happened was him and Ward were battling for position. Stewart was on the inside, moved up and ultimately led to Ward crashing. Ward got out of his car, and began making gestures at Stewart when he saw him come round again. He just kept going further into the middle of the track waving his arms about. Stewart was then up behind someone else and mustn't have seen him until too late.

That makes sense ( sad sense ) .

To be fair to Stewart though , what hope did he have of avoiding him ? None I think we will both agree . Tra
gic anyway you look at it .

It seems Stewart is still going to compete in the race later.

Now that's either balls of steel, heart of ice, or just a bit weird.

    I can't decide.

Like getting back on the horse, I suppose, but a bit disrespectful.

Umm.....well I just saw the video.....

And Tony Stewart's manager has said that it's just "business as usual" today.

I'm sorry, but that looked entirely avoidable to me. Is that one tragic loss of temper, or two??

Sorry, but to me that looks like the (notoriously bad tempered) Stewart trying to give the "kid" a bit of a fright and screwing up majorly.

It was completely avoidable. To me, the kid shouldn't have lost his **** like that. Wait until after the race then punch him or something, and I don't see how Stewart could've done it deliberately. But anyway, the investigation is ongoing.

I would say, I am surprised he is still competing in the NASCAR race later on.

I think he tried to scare him. Ward was stupid, but (perhaps I'm being stupid here) going on that video, Stewart is absolutely culpable too. Everyone else had pretty much slowed past the accident and had pulled way into the inside (as you would and should do under those circumstances). Stewart is up in the mid-lane to give him a fright. Bad, bad stuff.

I had to go back and watch it again (it was difficult enough to watch first time round), and now I do see what you mean. I never noticed how high up the track Stewart went. It doesn't take away from the fact that Ward shouldn't have been taking things into his hands in that way. Like I said, hit him after the race or something, rather than doing something stupid like that. People like us who are into our motor-racing know only too well what can happen when people decide to invade the track (see Tom Pryce), and again it's been shown here.

It was under yellow. I'm sorry, I just think that's quite damning. Apparently it's a "thing" that sometimes drivers will try to 'fling mud' at another driver on dirt track races. I think he was trying to do that, or something of that ilk, and cocked it up.

Indeed, but from what I'm seeing, WAY more blame sits on the more experienced shoulders of Stewart. Look, we've all lost our temper and done daft things, and I have no thought that he deliberately *tried* to run him over, as I say, I think he was trying to scare him. However the fact he's seemingly happy to go racing again today after having made such a catastrophic misjudgement, really does lead me to question if he has any sense of empathy at all.

Looks like he's pulled out of the NASCAR race after all.
