He was behind Jones because he was effectively being told he had no place here. I don't think anyone wanted to risk Reina staying and being content to be a second choice keeper on massive wages.
I'm sure we only played Brad ahead of Pepe in pre-season because we knew the latter wasn't going to stay anyway. I always felt he would be unwilling to play second fiddle with us, so I really can't understand him being happy to do so at Bayern. I think he's still good enough to be first choice for any number of clubs, and I'm sad to see him decline in this way.
I'll miss Pepe. Always seeme d agood character to have around when ever I saw videos of him with the team etc. Really surprised he's not gone to play football though, but probably (apart from Chelsea's) the bet sub keeper you're going to find
I not sure he wasn't good enough to still be first choice here. But I think Rodger's shipped him out after he brought in Mignolet, and subsequently Jones was playing preseason because we didn't want him to stay, rather than the other way round.
I think rodgers was sticking it to pepe as well. I also feel bayern is a guardiola move and its the end of pepe's career unless we don't know something huge about to occur with neuer. Jone is just jones. end of. the issue is minger would bcome no 2 rather than us sign a new reserve keeper so is there anyone available to improve it and if so who would you pick?
Yeah. I just meant he wasn't going to stay, regardless of who's decision that was. I agree he's good enough to be first choice for us. I'm sure we signed Mig for the long term because Pepe made no bones about his desire to play for Barca. Seems like the whole thing has backfired on everybody. Reina stuck on anyone's bench is a criminal waste, imo.
I think you need to give Mignolet more than 1 season, especially as it was a freak season in terms of the way we played and the disruption to the back 4. If after another year and with a more settled back 4 he still has a poor season then we can talk about replacing him.
Yeah I think the Barca thing probably ended up hurting him career wise. But least he's wanted at Bayern even if it's as backup, and he's at one of the few clubs who will pay him big money in the twilight of his career. I don't begrudge him taking a big payday over more game time.
Just seems like a waste of talent. He's apparently in his prime, and after playing 2nd or 3rd fiddle for Spain his whole career, he now had a genuine chance of becoming the number 1 with Casillas being a bit dodgy and Valdes injured and moving on from Barca. He could have been challenging with De Gea for that number 1 spot. Instead he'll just be sitting on the bench for the next 3 year with occasional cup appearance.
Exactly. He's still only 31, that's not at all old for a keeper. He could easily play at the top for several years yet. Shame. Unless we're going to buy Neuer, of course. Edit: Almost 32.
the rumours of Diego Lopez are welcome - think he is a top keeper and criminally underrated by Real Madrid.
See Swansea have been doing some dodgy accounting and saying that Vorm left and went to Spurs on a "free" which coincidently meant they don't have to pay the 30% sell on fee to Utrecht. They obviously agreed a deal with spurs which saw them add the cash onto the Davies fee so they'd earn more. Sneaky... and is what we all spoke about with the Lallana/Lambert sales.
Not really a transfer rumour but interesting journalistic perspective on why there are so many Liverpool transfer stories in media: "As for Liverpool, they are a huge global brand, the only English club who can compete with United on that scale, and coverage is also based on the demand and appetite from readers. With online coverage nowadays, papers can get exact numbers for clicks and visits to stories online and the reality is that United and Liverpool dwarf the rest in terms of interest, followed by Arsenal and Chelsea. In pure economics, advertisers want to pay for their product to be seen by as many people as possible, so a daily stream of United and Liverpool stories gives them that." -Mark Ogden (The Telegraph)
He won't be getting more than one more I'd be amazed if he's still our number 1 this time next year (and unhappy if he's still number 1 this time next week).
