I can hardly believe that in this day and age there are still people who support the continuation of a monarchy. Utterly regardless of the cost - or otherwise - to the taxpayer, the existance of a hereditary monarch completely goes against the concept of a meritocracy , which I thought we were supposed to be living in.
It's a ****ed up system even if the financial gain outweighs the costs, which I've yet to see proof of. Bowing and scraping and tugging our forelocks just feels wrong. And while I'm far from happy about having to kowtow to a bunch of Germans, I'm particularly unhappy with the magical transformation that elevates witless broodmares to divine figures of worship. No religion cracks, please.
Spot on. The royals cost us million's in security costs alone. Why don't the royals pay for their own security.
Britain has NEVER been a meritocracy and as far as I'm aware no other country has either, the world is as nepotistic as it's ever been and cronyism is as rife as it ever was too, this will never change as it's human nature to help friends and relatives more than people you don't know, it's the wrong system to have, but things like that will always go on in every level of society.
Stop moaning about the royals, be proud. Does the fact we give millions and millions of pounds every year to INDIA (who are not that poor anymore and growing fast) not deserve more moaning?
India has a £1Bn / annual space programme. We have nothing like it. And we give them £180M a year in aid WHY......?
Precisely my argument against the Royal Family. A head of State who only has the position because of the family she is born into in a supposedly democratic country is a joke
Our children should be inspired to believe they can achieve anything they want and our democracy should encourage that sense of aspiration. We should all be encouraged to take responsibility for our own political affairs, and our democracy should embody that responsibility. The monarchy does none of these things. It embodies a spirit of deference and dependence on others. It robs us of aspiration, telling us that even the wisest and most talented commoner is no match for even the most unpleasant and immoral royal. Crucially though, the monarchy is the heart of the British constitution and as such it denies us the best democracy we could have. It keeps from us the power to rule ourselves, it crushes the democratic spirit in order to justify its own existence. http://www.republic.org.uk/What we want/In depth/The Case for a Republic/index.php
I am not a royalist but I think something is grossly unfair. The tax payers pays the Royal family a Kings ransom. In return tourist come and most if not all the money is paid back into the Government by various taxes. The bit I think is unfair is that the North of Ireland rarely sees a member of the Royal Family so the Royal family bring very little income to N.I. The Royal Family spend a considerable time in Scotland, I am not sure about Wales but a lot of time in the London area. Yet Cameron says we are all in this together and is trying to and has cut the money for North of Ireland. If the Royal Family are not prepared to stay the proportional correct time in N.I. then Cameron needs to allocate much more money or else leave us.
Surprise Surprise, Prince Charles funding from the taxpayer increased by 18% last year. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...income-taxpayer-rises-18-bucks-recession.html
