So, Celtic have been re-instated to the CL after Legia Warsaw brought an ineligible substitute on for the final couple of minutes whilst leading 6-1 on aggregate. Now, first and foremost, I will go on record as saying I always love to see Celtic (or Rangers) in the CL due to the fanatisism & passion at their games, but this is an absolute scandal. They got a reprieve with the Sion case a few years back, absolutely justified, a team under a transfer embargo had signed a team full of new players, a blatant '**** you' to the rules, but there have been several cases dismissed, one last season Debrecen of Hungary, 4-1 up on aggregate brought on a sub, UEFA dismissed the appeal 'as there was no footballing advantage gained'. So, Celtic were likely to hit 6 in the last TWO minutes of this one? Staggering decision this, happy as I am for another British team to enter the CL.
I totally agree...This seems a very strange turn of events.. Brings back memories when our appeal was dismissed even though Tranmere had 12 players on the pitch in an FA Cup match after putting on a sub and not taking anyone off.
I remember that! I think they actually had 11 as they subbed a red carded lad, but that was a scandal! This looks to me like UEFA fancy Celtic as a better pull than Legia, they set a precedent with the Debrecen 'no advantage gained' decision, then they have overturned a 5 goal swing fopr a 2 minute cameo! Bizarre, in the extreme.
Think kicking them out is harsh...especially for the sake of 3 minutes A fine possibly Club secretary should be sacked for allowing the mistake to happen mind
Might be murdered, never mind sacked! The loss of £15million plus to a Polish side is unimaginable, they didn't just beat Celtic, they tore them apart.
If he came on and scored the decider then I understand - but come on! He played for 3 minutes an of a game where Celtic needed 6 goals to win! Crazy and ludicrous decision - I wonder how Celtic would feel if this was the other way around
And our game against Tranmere was in the balance! I think it was deep in injury time I remember and the bloke who shouldn't have been on the pitch headed our last gasp free kick away to safety! I cant help feeling that if we had been a top side like Man Utd at the time there would have been more fuss made of it and a somewhat underserved replay would have been awarded!
They awarded the game to Celtic due to the ineligble player which apparently is an automatic 3-0 result for a "freebie" meaning that the scores were then 4-4 and as Celtic had scored an away goal they went through http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28701951
Even if he had stayed on the bench, an unused substitute, would it have resulted in the same outcome????
Yeah, and that's what they will use as a reason to keep Celtic in, the 0-3 forfeit has been around for years. Interestingly though, the Debrecen incident, aggregate result (as the 1-1 draw stood...). 4-1. It would have been 3-3 and as such ET & poss pens would have needed to be arranged.
http://whatculture.com/sport/celtic...-proves-premier-league-lenient-sunderland.php This berk compares things and seems to think we should have been kicked out of the Premier League for our misdemeanour! Blimey! Someone should tell him that strictly speaking Warsaw were not kicked out of the champions league, that they forfeited the game 3-0 which resulted in their exit!
This is an outrage, what a farce the whole system is... Everybody can see the only logical solution which is fair to all parties involved is to give their place to Man United.
Even if the same rules were applied to us as were given to the Celtic game we would have still been safe.
