In the highly unlikely situation that the engine mapping changes cause Red Bull to lose so much performance that they struggle to match McLaren and Ferrari for the rest of the season I'd be questioning the size of the lead they've managed to build up running a solution that ultimately turned out to be illegal.
Was the engine mapping actually illegal, i thought it was the direction that the idea was going in, and how they were wasting up to 10% of fuel doing this, and it looked like it could have been more if it was let develop.
A particular engine mapping isn't illegal but the effect of the mapping is against current regulations. Similar to the TMD in a way. That actual concept, even the component itself, wasn't illegal but it was being used to have an aerodynamic effect in way that was against the regulations.
Against the spirit of the regulations, yeah, but in this case it's also against the letter of the regulations.
I don't know, they seemed to get on ok before they started using it last year. They took 4 wins with 3 of them as 1-2 victories. (Button in Australia and China, Hamilton in Turkey and Canada)
Well that was a let down. Time to admit nobody will catch red bull. If things change in 2013 there may be a chance then
Come to think of it, some teams might end up even further behind the leaders than they were before because the bigger teams might have better aerodynamic efficiency to compensate the loss of the off throttle us of the blown diffuser compared to the other teams.
Hahaha well saidJulius. Newey's aero package is so good isn't it? I also think there's some truth in Schneiderlin's comment. For those who hope for Red Bull to be caught; let's see what happens in the race. It must be said they seem not to have not suffered at all! (in terms of their relative gap over the others).
are exhaust gasses a part of the car? It was a very dodgy ruling to ban it, for sure if Ferrari had the best ebd system it would've stood until the end of the season. FIA in full effect. If McLaren start to take a lead no doubt having an M in your team name will be classed as illegal.
interesting to hear now that Red Bull didnt even use "Hot Blowing", seems to be "Game Over" for McLaren and Ferrari - they both use it.
I think I'm correct in saying, out of the top 3 teams RBR are the only team using a cold blown diffuser with the hot blown. Cant wait for practice 1 now come silverstone.
Yeah! thanks cosicave, just came across it by pure chance had to make it into an avatar Haters gona hate the finger.
What about the rumors that SV was testing their Silverstone setup during FP1 at Valencia? He was about 2.5s off the pace, a sign of things to come?
With the Silverstone engine mapping he was 3.1 seconds off Webber's lap time. After those runs Ted Kravitz reported that Vettel had come in and switched to the Valencia mapping. He continued to be 3 seconds off Webber until his fuel came down and he closed the gap to 2.5 seconds. Was it later clarified that Kravitz was wrong and Vettel did not, in fact, switch to Valencia settings halfway through FP1, so the whole session was run under Silverstone settings? Or was the huge gap simply a matter of fuel loads?
I only heard the first bit about running a Silverstone setup, my feed let me down. Getting live F1 in the US wasn't easy in the first place Given the total ban on off throttle blowing I'd imagine teams would stop blowing the diffuser all together other wise the cars balance will become erratic.
Bob - I got diverted from finding a stream for you - hope you were OK? what worked for you? In case I need it for Silverstone.
Red Bull wouldn't be stupid enough to have the same fuel loads on both their cars. That way, all the teams would know exactly how much Red Bull will lose from the ban. Being 3s off the pace suggests they were running a lot more fuel - probably to ensure other teams don't find out how the ban will affect Red Bull. With Silverstone settings, Vettel didn't look fantastic through the corners but that might be because the car felt completely different to the one he usually drives so he was taking it easy.
