Aye it's hell mate and only another week to go!! The seas ****ing freezing mind. Quite pissed off to be honest in all my years of gonna Spain my phrases are Gracias Dos cervezas Dos Cuba libre And this lot don't understand any of em!!! They live next door anarl, unbelievable.
My daughter Emily works behind the bar in there on a Saturday night. Loves the place and so will you!
Cheers TheRonster - all good stuff, can't wait to play there! You'd better warn her that my band rather partial to beer
Covers bands - defined as " having no underlying ability to write original songs and performing them." Why anyone would want to watch them is perplexing given the nature of the material presented. The Sun Inn has tapped into a market to draw in the stupified X Factor masses - and why not - there's money to be made in listless imitation. The pub itself is ok when there is no sound of putrifying decay eminating from its bowels.
Cover bands have a place. For fans of music from the 60's 70's or even 80's, going to see the origional band can sometimes be a huge disapointment. They are old and just can't sing like they used to.
We did a bit of both, our most popular song was 'We Don't Know The ****ing Words'(that was the lyric to the entire song) and it had a very pleasant reggae intro.
Defined by who? A nice piece of idealism straight out of the the early musings of Adorno and Benjamin on art and reproduction. What pompous nonsense. So, you would apply that to Jazz, folk and classical performers would you? That statement would no doubt amuse the likes of Jagger and McCartney who started out in covers bands then happened to start writing their own songs. What makes me laugh is that I have made a part of my living from writing original music for film, TV and radio and released records in the past. However, earning money from music is an opportunity not a right. Playing in a covers band is just about having fun, and given the various audiences and the ages of those audiences that chose to go out and enjoy it, they may find it fun too. Not every musician can write original material, should they be ruled out of performing then? Unfortunately, you've crudely conflated X-factor with the growing heritage music industry, which is a big mistake. Given that an awful lot of 'new' music borrows, recycles and samples ... check out the interesting writings of Paul Miller (aka DJ Spooky) you might also need to define what new or new original music is and who is allowed to play or be entertained by it? Perhaps all musicians who fail to write and perform original music should find themselves on a trip to Soylent Green! PS we do actually play a couple of my original songs, are we absolved?
As Lincoln said Beatles and Stones started out as cover bands. It teaches you a lot more then you think. How craft a song, how to use dynamics to create atmosphere and feeling. As a bedroom/hobbyist guitarist I'd give my right arm to be in a covers band(Not literally though ).
Clovis does not understand music.....my mums local is sun and for music its... well music....no matter how good or bad.youll be loved Lincoln..promise.....unless 1direction covers of course!...we love you already...look forward
.....A bit like making a statement that is senseless ? You clearly don't understand the genesis of the creative process. Essentially copy/imitate, get feedback, gain confidence, experiment, test the waters with original stuff, get feedback...boom - on your way. Audiences love to listen to what they are familiar with and will buy into new original material if the imitators are good at it. That's how it works. Name anyone of note that never went through that progression.
Just to say thanks to fellow posters for the information about the Sun Inn. What an absolutely brilliant gig - it was rammed (four deep at the bar at one point) with folks having a good time. Good sound in there, great atmosphere! I enjoyed it more than other gig I can remember for a long, long time. A nice cheer from the City fans in there when I dedicated Mr. Blue Sky to our beloved team. My head is rather sore this morning...
What an ill-informed and c**tish comment. I'm in both a covers band and an originals band, so I have a better perspective than most on this. The idea that only bands who play their own stuff are worthy of credit is blown out of the water by the simple fact that, over the years, while I've seen some ****ing awful cover bands and some great originals bands, I've also seen some superb cover bands and some utterly dire original bands.
clueless twonker !! i admit , im a bit of a music snob and even i see your comment as bellendfication personified
I gave a rousing rendition of Little Ole Wine Drinker in a Banchory pub on Friday night, it was late and my Scottish mates thought it a reasonable imitation, not in the least listless, but, after five hours of half'n'halves, with a curry somewhere in between, there was definitely the sound of putrifying decay emanating from somewhere the next morning. Why do we do these things!?!?
Topical stuff, Fez. A friend of mine just went to see Merle Haggard in Albuquerque. (She lives in Santa Fe). Said the Hag was, as ever, brilliant!
