Coleman was already above Skrtel Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta finished below us with some shocking losses Davies it's hard to judge in a **** team Demichelis threw away the CL and FA Cup in a week and played only a fraction of the PL season, most of which was ****e Lovren was good, hence us buying him, but the fact is his team massively collapsed after Cortese realised Katharina was a fraud
So, Cahill, Terry & Azpilicueta cant be better because they finished below us... But Skrtel can be better than DeMichelles Also, Chelsea had the best defence... not sure what you're "shocking losses" refer to. think it was more the fact they didn't have a CF all season otherwise they'd have walked the league. And you're first point about Coleman, so? You said, name defenders that were better.. I named him.
Well that makes no sense. Being average throughout is better than being awful for the majority than great at the end.
Why? One team won the title in the last few weeks of the season, one team didn't due to conceding 5 goals in 2 games. Also Demichelles may not have been brilliant at the start of the seaon, but 1st year in a new Country, some reason he got a lot of criticism (from me included) but shut us all up at the end and during the WC. On the other hand, Sakho was no better in his first year but people were quick to defend him. Just because Skrtel plays for Liverpool, does not mean I have to think he was the 2nd best defender in the league. And I'm pretty sure if you ask anyone bar Astro, they'll agree with that
But you need the personnel to do it. We could have easily done the same thing, but we still would have conceded plenty of goals because our defender/keeper and defensive midfielders aren't as good as theirs.
If you put Skrtel in a team setup like Chelsea, he'd look like a world beater. I agree that Skrtel isn't the best CB in the world and far from the best in the league but last year he simply was one of the best because he had a great season whilst most others had a poor one. Demichelles should not be considered as he was absolute garbage for most the season, he just finished well. Kosceiny (sp) and Mertesacher (sp) were better.
Don`t look who finished above you for the best defenders, look who conceded the least goals. All teams play against the same attackers, you finished second based on your attack scoring goals, not your defence.
I don't think he would. He's not looked a world beater for us. Even when he won POTY he was good, but in a very average team. I'll admit, Skrtle looked alright as the spare defender in the back 3. Mainly because he didn't get dragged wide, when he got the ball had 2 easer options each side of him and his main job was to head out any cross, didn't even really have to mark an awful lot. Demichelles is a matter of opinion and fair enough. But original point is, there were plenty of other defenders better than Skrtel last year. And by Astro's logic that you can't be better if you finished in a lower team (btw we're ****ed by signing all these players from clubs below us if that the case) then Demichelles was better than Skrtel
Technically not true... we didn't have to face SASAS Thanksfully, or I reckon we'd have been spanked wonder if Rodgers gave us doing attack v defence in training last year as it was just too one sided!
He's not been in a great team bar when he first arrived and hardly got a look in. I thought Skrtel looked awful in the three btw PS...least we're back to disagreeing
Really? I thought that's when he was at his best, doing the basics of defending. True, it felt weird agreeing all the time
I think Skrtel plays better when he doesn't have time to think; aka plays a natural game or someone tells him what to do.
One of Skrtel's strengths is that he's always across to cover the fullback (read as Johnson) when they inevitably fail to get back to defend. I can't believe we're still arguing about Skrtel on this board. It's all very simple. He's not a world beating defender, nor is he ****. He's a good, solid defender but one who couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. That's fine, plenty of good defenders aren't also good leaders. He has his flaws like any other player in the world (his passing isn't a flaw, it's a myth).
Erm, Skrtel is worse than Johnson when in a wide position. Gets beaten and never cuts out a cross. He's good rushing for those 50/50 balls because has a bit of pace and will sprint out and slide in to put it out for a throw. But if a winger stands him up then then inevitably beat him. And I only assume you mean his passing ability I a myth in the sense that he has no ability, because he's about as comfortable on the ball finding a forward pass as Toure
Do you even know who Skrtel is? As for being beaten by a winger, put any defender in the world in a one-on-one situation with a winger and they'll get beaten. Its a team setup issue, not a player issue; aka too much space in behind for the opposition to exploit.
