Usually the media or the fans. Seems to make a good headline / comment. The clubs do sometimes do it, but not as often. Didn't Houllier also call Le Tallec the next Zidane? And Gerrard compared Joe Cole to Messi I think also comments often get made about playing style and then gets blown out of proportion by the fans and media. Like when SAF said Rooney played in a similar style to Pele, which led to the inevitable 'White Pele' chants and media comments.
This is what I meant regarding comparisons. A player or manager may sometimes make a comparison to make a comment on style etc. and this gets twisted by others into them having said that they're the next so-and-so.
Lets be honest, on here....its usually Matth that makes that comparison. Paul Furlong......wow, now theres a blast from the past. Had high hopes for him, being our record signing at the time. But think he scored less than 20 goals in 90 games or some ****. When Gullit, Hughes and Vialli turned up he was sh!t canned out the door.
Usually twisted by fans of other clubs who just want to try and use it to score points tbh. Not that I would ever do such a thing
