I've been thinking recently about a few things that would be a good idea for increasing fan participation and switching up a few things that have become a bit stale.

The first is, I think, a good idea:

It would be nice if there was some way that the club could collaborate in the making of new songs to sing at QPR. I think things have gone a bit stale at QPR in terms of songs. We sing about hating Chelsea too much and we sing a couple of old classics but a lot of our songs now have a generic tune where we insert any players name as they do at every club to the same tune.

It would be nice if QPR could facilitate some kind of YouTube competition where fans make songs and they are voted out. Perhaps, at first, we could make 3 or 4 new songs. Maybe a couple about players and a couple about the club or about our history. Of course, that's not the only way to do it but I think this way would work because they'd be made popular throughout the voting stages, would be fan chosen (which means people would already be on board with them) and once they were selected, the club could publicise and advertise them on their website and via Twitter and Facebook, etc.

My second idea. This is perhaps less important but still a nice idea:

I'm sick of Pigbag. It's had a good innings but it's time to move on. How about a competition for every game where a fan gets to choose the music for the team to come out to, with the only rule being that the song must be exciting or provoke anticipation and atmosphere.

Alternatively, all fans have a vote off for a song that will be kept for a whole half of the season. It can be any song and whichever song gets chosen the most wins.

    What do you think?

Pigbag can stay or go but what does everyone think about the first idea?

    Reasonable first idea.

Second idea too subjective. You want it exciting, anticipatory and atmospheric. Handel's Messiah does that for me but I would not want QPR to come out to it!

Listening to Jerusalem during the medal ceremonies at the CG is great. Joey might not like it though...

When they read the players names out it would be nice for some crowd participation like in europe where the tanoy says the first name and the crowd shouts the surname. Gets the crowd loud and up for it before a ball is kicked.

I quite like Pigbag - it has been adopted as QPR's song - not just for entrance, but when we score a goal - so that would be difficult to change. Even at away games when the tune isn't played the crowd make it themselves.

Would be a shame to lose that imo.

Grr... everyone is talking about the second idea! What about the first? Would it work? Do you think it's something our club would ever do? Any other ideas of how to go about it?

I really don't mean to be offensive but think the first idea is rubbish (Sorry mate).

Since football began, songs and chants have been made up on a whim by some wit in the crowd, and to over complicate that process is, IMO, really not needed. It would, for many I feel, make it far too 'corporate' and 'staged'

As I said, please don't be offended 'cos it is only my opinion....and you did ask.

This. Chants are spontaneous, though I agree the Chelsea hating ones are really boring.

And I would be delighted to hear PigBag a bit more often than we have over the last few years. And Hi Ho Silver Lining even more.

Sorry Mate, can't see any mileage in the first idea.

I thought songs were made up at the LSA?

I don't get to loftus road that often, living in the west country it just isn't financially doable for me regularly.

The last few times I've been to matches I had thought that it was all pretty quiet, and maybe some of the songs could do with a spruce up.

I don't think a competition is the way to go, maybe an official singing area would help? I went to Celtic a couple of years ago, the green brigade made all the noise and made some atmosphere in a fairly dull game.

Sorry to waffle on, but maybe the lack of new songs is due to a lack of club heroes? We've seen a lot of faces through the door the last few years, I don't think any have done enough to get immortalised in song!

Oh and something I miss is the 'HOOPS' chant that gets a bit tribal. I remember it lasting for ages and ages some times, 5-10 minutes of it, it was a great wall of noise. It doesn't seem to happen now. Certainly not for more than a minute!

Agree that we need more songs, perhaps we should just nick other teams songs?
Pigbag is a part of our culture and must stay.
The suggestion about the crowd shouting the surname would be good. In Sweden (Norrköping) the goal scorers first name is announced and the crowd do the rest.
LR will be buzzing again now that we are back and hopefully entertaining.

Or we go the Italian way - the club supports an organised group of 'ultras' - they get free season tickets, away travel etc (all unofficially, very Italian) and their job is to provide 'atmosphere'. Hence the enormous and frequently offensive (and funny) banners you see in Italian grounds. Small groups of fans are let in early to set everything up. Have to say I like flares at night games too. In my experience this makes the build up to games in Italy (or at least AC Milan) really good. But during the games themselves tension takes over and its amazing how quiet 75,000 people can be if the game is dull.

Ultras also sometimes turn up at training sessions and abuse, or occasionally assault, underperforming players. And coaches. Nah, we couldn't, could we?
