As people's use of technology increases and attention-spans decrease proportionally headlines will BE the story. The actual writing that comes after them will simply be the stuff written for the benefit of not getting sued. Already the case much of the time.

Sports headlines seem to be a weird grey area of journalistic law in that you can pretty much say whatever you want in the headline then clarify that it's total bollocks in the body of the piece. Course most people aren't so good at critically reading the story but instead have the headline running through every sentence for them which is a shame.

So when they read "disappointed he left" or something they will be thinking that this is "slamming" since the headline said it was. Or maybe evidence of "fury" (another word used in headlines whenever anyone has expressed any indication of mild annoyance).

On the subject of media am I the only one who feels very uncomfortable with all these Twitter users saying snarky things on the official Spurs Twitter feed about Rose signing a new deal? I mean I know it's just usual internet noise-making but do you think these people pay any attention to the fact that this is the official Spurs Twitter feed and not just the comments section on yet another blog?

I mean if players were to notice bile thrown at them online it would be through the official Spurs feeds wouldn't it?

On sites like this people can and should feel able to slag players off as much as they want. But to me it seems different doing it on the one outlet which may very well be noticed by players. For me it's a bit closer to slagging them off in the stadium. Personally I would leave comments on here which I simply would not do on the official Twitter feed or whatever.

And, to clarify, I am no fan of Danny Rose...

Fully agree Lenny, though one thing I will say, and although it's a guess I reckon I'm near the mark, all the people who tweet the Spurs Official account or even the players directly with abuse are all armchair fans who've probably never or rarely seen the Lane, probably don't buy any merchandise, became a fan for a s**t reason (oh I love <insert player name> so I'll support Spurs for the time being until he leaves) and just sit at home all day doing their best at trying to make others feel s**tty just because they themselves are an idiotic t**t, so I'd hope that any player who does read the negative and spiteful comments will just laugh and take it with a pinch of salt.
Similar to what you mentioned, I will not hold back my feelings on a site like this, I don't want Danny Rose at this club but I won't go through the trouble in trying to potentially unsettle the player through a social network where it's likely Spurs players will check from time to time, whether they have a personal account or not. He did actually have a Twitter account but deleted it - due to abuse I think - so when the tweets are directly aimed at a player, I'd say good chance they'll read a few, where as I'm sure every player is intrigued every now and then to see comments sent to the Spurs official one to gain an idea on fan's feelings.

I agree, too. I'm not a massive fan of Rose, but some of those supposed fans are acting like he's done something appalling to the club.
Having a relatively poor season, in which he started well and then got injured in a game that he should've played no part in, isn't a hanging offence, for me.
The bloke doesn't deserve to be attacked by Twatters just because he's not the best left-back in the world.

In other news, there are rumours circulating that we've reached an agreement to sign Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio.
He's an Argentinian centre-half, which might explain why we're being linked with him, he's nearly 24 and the fee would be about £16m, with a large chunk of that heading to River Plate.
He's only played twice for his country, so I'm assuming that he'd either have to take Spanish citizenship or go through an appeal to get a work permit.

Everyone's free to do what they want, obviously, but I'm free to say I don't understand Spurs fans who would criticize Rose or any other player on Spurs' site the way they did.

From Sporting's site: both what Spurs did and Sporting's take on it seem reasonable to me.

"Over the course of the last month, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Futebol SAD, began negotiations with the athlete Eric Dier for the renewal of his contract.

Unexpectedly, Sporting, SAD was confronted by the player’s father and official representative with a bid from Tottenham Hotspur, with that bid activating a clause agreed by previous Boards of Directors for the sale of the player for an amount of €5,000,000 or more, unless the personal terms offered as part of the bid are matched. Due to the Club’s current salary policy, the respective balance within the squad and the on-going financial restructuring underway at the Club, it was not possible to match the proposed terms.

Furthermore, Sporting, SAD was also informed that the player did not want to remain with the Club even on equal terms and that any equal or improved personal terms would not have been accepted.

In light of the above, Sporting, SAD announces the complete sale of the economic rights of the player Eric Dier to Tottenham Hotspur for €5,000,000, without any future rights relative to the player.

Despite the above mentioned events, Sporting, SAD wishes Eric Dier all the best in his career."

Meanwhile, what's with all the CBs? We have Dier, and now we supposedly (!) signed Musachio for 15 million. I thought Kaboul was fine physically last year. He just got caught in the same undertow which pulled Rose, Vertonghen and Dawson down. I don't understand selling Chiriches, as he seems the kind of player who would do well in Poch's system, but who knows? I actually find it hard to believe Barca still want Vertonghen, and would be very surprised if he goes this year, but that would be an explanation.

Sometimes I think Levy can't resist getting someone if he thinks the price is right. The problem is we have too many already, whose price will deteriorate unless they play. So we have the choice of taking a loss due to buying too many players, or selling our starters and hurting our league position.

Edit: already been posted.

I'm hoping Rose's contract extension is purely to get us as much money as possible when we sell him. Surely no one has that much confidence in his ability?! <yikes>
However, it's probably means he won't be leaving for a year or so now. <doh>

Dier passed his medical and is officially a Spurs player. Poch has said he hopes he will be involved with the first team this coming season.

We have 6 Cb's now, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Chiriches, Dawson and the two kids Dier and Velcovic. We are supposedly close to signing another one Villareal's Argentinian Musacchio. Dont know if its just a rumour. Surely if this guy does come in either Daws, Kaboul or Chiriches will be sold.

At least Poch is concentrating on reinforcing our shoddy defence.

In addition, Jamal Lascelles has just started following spurs official, which would indicate that something could be going on behind the scenes. Surely he wouldn't follow, as it would just give him unnecessary bullshit from forest
Fans.
Schneiderlin did the same, and we've all seen what's going on there!

Regarding Rose I think overall it's a good thing. Before he got injured at the start of last season he was playing well and was starting to win me over. If he can get back to that form and Davies turns out to be the real deal then it can only be good for the club to have some competition for places. Also it means Vertonghen won't get a strop on about playing out of position (if he is still here at the start of the season).
Which leaves Benny. He's only 30 so really should be in his prime. I'm a big fan, as on his day there are not too many better left backs about. The problem is he did make quite a few errors last year at QPR. Also looking at what the QPR fans were saying on their board and on here his attitude wasn't great. Maybe a new manager and a kick up the arse is what he needs to get back playing well. I'd love him to prove all the doubters on here wrong but I think it's more likely he will be sold than get the chance too.

I've got a feeling Kaboul and Dawson may be off.

Dawson's past his prime there's no doubting that but he's been a great servant and someone who seems willing and even happy to stay even if the chances of regular football are slim. Kaboul has struggled with injuries since the 12-13 season and despite the fact I'm probably his biggest fan (always said when fit he's one of the best in the League) I think Poch is looking for more reliability in terms being available for selection on a regular basis and therefore sees Younes as perhaps too much of a risk.

It'll be a shame if both go but taking away the sentimental aspects, it may probably be for the best :)().

If rumours are true, Vertonghen may be signing a new deal in the coming days, pessimistically it says he'll stay for this season where as optimistically I'm hoping it says we'll get at least a couple more but either way he's the number one CB in my opinion (despite an inconsistent 13-14 season). Then there'll be a battle between Vlad (who'd start off as the favourite) and Dier, plus Veljkovic and possibly Musacchio if he joins (who may jump ahead of Vlad).

I'm also a huge fan of Benny but I think Rose's new deal has unfortunately rubberstamped his departure. Without a doubt the best LB we've had in years, certainly in the Premier League era in my opinion and wherever he ends up I'd wish him the very best.

It isn't on his Twitter account now and I've seen no reference to it anywhere.
He's not in their squad today, but he's slightly short of full fitness, apparently.

I saw a screen shot earlier that someone had taken from their iPhone, and then looked myself. We were the second most recent follow he'd made.

Throughout last season, against "listening to" ( intended for music ) vertonghen's personal facebook page said, "athletico madrid". And he's still here.
