No worries on the charity side Fez as I am a novice compared with my husband who has done charity/community service work since he retired in 1986. In fact he has completed more years in this unpaid area(28) than he did in his corporate career(26). I started in 2000 when I quit corporate life and love it. The main charity we work for is a NSW Hospital charity which raises about A$10 Million a year which is distributed to Public hospitals across NSW. Over 200 branches of the charity across NSW are involved and all work is unpaid. Incidentally TWF indirectly contributed 2000 pounds to this charity a couple of years ago so he will never be forgotten. We have a desk computer each and I have a laptop for my charity secretarial work but no i-phone yet! Will sneak a peek at the forum from time to time as there are some good people on here.
Well tigerscanada, that image brings tears to my eyes as they are so like the hockey boots that I wore in the last match I played over 50 years ago. It was a mixed team game( my fiancee was in goal for us) on a bleak day in Millom when I went to challenge a local Polish guy and from point blank range he slammed the ball straight into my mouth. No mouthguards in those days ( goalies who wore pads were called cissy's!) and the resultant extensive dental work destroyed my appetite for the game. Cannot remember what I did with the boots though.
I'm so sorry to hear about your mishap Mrs_B_M_B - you have my sympathies indeed, but I must say you are a member of an exclusive group on that front. In 1964, in our annual end of year girls hockey team vs boys football team challenge match, I suffered a similar fate - I fell over onto the grass ( I maintain to this day I was intentionally tripped !) and one of the girls, ball nowhere near her, took a swipe which clobbered me square in my "beautiful" set of upper front teeth. She didn't knock them out, but about a couple of years later they turned very black as she had annihilated the nerves so badly they eventually had to be replaced with a bridge. That bridge has been replaced 3 times subsequently.I thought she must have fancied me - no such luck. I never did marry the lass, in fact never saw her again as it was our final year. I have a suspicion she must have been a pal of yours somehow, seeking revenge on your behalf !!! Needless to say, like yourself, playing the game was history as a participant from that point on. Anyone for tennis ?
Total donations now up to 465 Pounds with another 215 to come next Wednesday pushing the total to at least 680 Pounds. Regarding your Hockey experience my husband was once asked after listing major injuries in playing Football(broken leg) Rugby Union(broken collarbone) Rugby League(broken jaw), what was the toughest sport he had ever played. He replied mixed Hockey citing one match in the 60's in Lancaster when after 2 of his team were left hobbling by wild swipes by a female opponent a stick fight resulted and 6 players plus the ref ended up in hospital. He was one of them suffering facial injuries requiring stitching plus severe concussion inflicted by a female! He vowed never again to play in a game where a female wields a stick!
Now now, tut tut...we all know Mr_B_M_B is telling a whopping porky here. He's obviously been playing the greatest game on earth for many years with his good lady wife - I thought "stick-wielding" was part of the job description BTW - whatever your special/significant day is later this week....same day as Hiroshima Day in one of your previous posts - I wish you a very Happy one. Lovely to see we're close to the target on the charity drive - many thanks to you.
I can concur, many years ago I used to play Badminton and went on a summer course at Scarborough college for a week in the holidays. At the same time there was a course for both Tennis and women's hockey going on. As a bit of fun at the end of the week they arranged for each sport to play each other. When we played the women Hockey team, I have never come up against a dirtier set of players in my sporting life, and still have a scar on my ankle were one of them wacked me.
And thanks to you Mrs BMB for your outstanding contribution for this really worthy cause. And to Spanner for the whole idea and setting this up. And to everyone on here who chipped in to get us to the target. Our Not606'ers should be proud of themselves. Mrs BMB....don't stay away!!
I've yet to donate, not forgotten just working away and forgot to bring my English card meter and card as I'll use my UK account Should be able to do it at the weekend
Hiroshima was hit exactly 3 years after I was born and after working in the nuclear industry for about 5 years before I left the UK in 1966 I planned to visit there on Hiroshima Day. On my 60th birthday in 2002 I finally made it and spent a lovely day there. Amazing place considering the 1945 devastation. Today is also special for me as 48 years ago to the day I became engaged(in South Africa) for the 6th time, with a little apprehension, after previously failing in the marriage stakes leaving 1 husband and 4 other dumped fiancee's in my wake before the age of 24. 1 month later I married a Hull lad in Australia and the rest is history. I have enjoyed my time on here enormously but now is an appropriate time to leave and allow my husband to carry the Blue Mountains banner. Thank you all for the memories!
