The same argument could be said about Kevin Philips or Ian Rush. Both came from lower leagues and both did well in the top division given a chance. In my eyes a goal scorer is a goal scorer wherever they play. If they know where the back of the net is, which Soriano undoubtedly does. Soriano's team got as far as any English team in the Europa league last season and he was the Europa league's leading scorer. Salzburg well knocked out Ajax over 2 legs as well. Fair enough Connor is younger but if you take away that period of 5 games at the end of last season he has done zilch to justify his wages, cost and reputation. But maybe a kid from Ipswich is a less dangerous bet then a proven European goalscorer. I still think Connors been tapped up. We need to move him on and move on quickly.
He's not proven at any decent level though sandy - the Europa league is a nothing competition now when majority of bigger sides put out a reserve team week in week out. Ian Rush came from the lower leagues when the gulf between the lower and higher leagues was a small step not a massive gap. You cannot compare Soriano from the Austrian league to Phillips and Ian Rush mate. No way. He's nowhere near proven and no bigger risk than Stokes (and I wouldn't want him back either)
This is it for me mate. He's had a chance in the top league with Espanyol and miserably failed. Apart from that he's played lower leagues only at the standard of lower championship/league 1. He's also 29 next month and available for as little as 2 million apparently. Why hasn't nobody come in for him before, or now for that matter? I'm sure you just like being controversial
No not at all. I've no idea why some other team hasn't picked him up. He has been linked with a few Premier league teams in the past but maybe Salzburg were asking too much for him. http://talksport.com/football/salzb...-other-european-giants-are-reportedly-chasing ''Had things worked out slightly differently Jonathan Soriano would already be at a top club in Europe. The striker scored a ridiculous 32 goals for FC Barcelona’s B team in the 2010/11 Spanish second division, handing them what would have been a play-off place for promotion to La Liga were they eligible, but he had the minor obstacle of Lionel Messi blocking his path from making consistent appearances with Barca’s seniors. Looking to play regularly, he left for Red Bull Salzburg in 2012, but it is evident that he needs a challenge at a much higher level. Last season he managed 29 goals in 36 games with Salzburg, but this season he is blowing those numbers away, notching up 31 strikes in only 27 appearances, including a ridiculous long-range stunner against Ajax which allowed him to complete a brace in the Europa League last 32. Considering there are few natural goalscorers on the market these days, could a Premier League side be tempted to make an offer for the former Barcelona man?'' As i said before it's not the goals tally that is amazing but the amount of assists.
This has the stink of another Colback like secret tapping up. It is the unscrupulous clubs that are doing this tapping up that needs to be clamped down on very hard with points deductions for those found to be guilty.
I still harbour hopes that on this occasion it is only paper talk and a contract can be sorted, but none of us truly know what is going on behind the scenes.
Well Gus has confirmed what I suspected, the lad is overvaluing himself, trying to rip the club off so he can buy more 15k bottles of Champers. He can **** off for me now. What an absolute flop he's been, nowt but a self important egotistical 1 in 7 forward who's cost us a fortune and in three years has only managed to give us 6 games of form and the odd league cup goal against **** opponents.
If we are starting a book on where he is going, what are the odds for Wickham to Wycombe? (Btw, writing this on me kindle - n and b still goosed on laptop). X
Honestly, I've been hoping and praying the lad would be reasonable. He's got so much potential I think Gus could get the best out of. But the fact remains he's done **** all. I know in his and a lot of people head he saved us, but I don't agree, it's not like his goals were solo efforts. Plus there's Fabio's, Aj's and Giaccs goals and assists without which, Wickham's goals would be irrelevant. The Squad kept us up not connor, he did well back end and more than played his part, but it's a squad game and I don't think the lad gets it.
i think hes alwqays been like that but, then the best players are always big headed and think they are gods gift its part of what makes them good! should just give him a proformance enhanced deal so you can be like if you think your good enough to be paid X then prove it if you score this ammount of goals ect then your pay will go up give him something to drive for something i dont think has been done yet if all hes bothered about is money that is, unless hes been tapped up then let him rot!
I'm in the Connor camp, get the bot signed up, show him some commitment, he has been so poorly managed its unbelievable, this is the same boy who came to us over Liverpool for game time, never really given a chance, the best young forward that's English IMHO
If he's trying to hold the club to ransom, then he has to go, simple as that. It's about time our club toughened up. I'm still firmly with the 'Connor in' camp, in my opinion he's been mismanaged since being at the club, let down by previous managers and when he finally got a proper run in the team (his first one) he went on a goalscoring run.
But now we're just speculating on contract terms, how do you know a performance enhanced deal hasn't been on the table from the off? It's been ages since Larsson and Mannone signed and we've these quotes I've got to assume our final offer has just gone in. Take it or leave it.
I agree with everything you say. We can't afford to have another risky striker on the books for the next few years. We already have Graham and Altidore (and Fletcher to a degree.) To be honest i'd rather he was sold and we'd taken Campbell back from Cardiff.
In my mind fella, We always were going to have get rid of one of the big three lads. Not the same but still too similar for all three of them to be here. For me, Connor is the best all rounder of the three and the one I'd have like to have kept most all. He's making the decision for us here unfortunately. I'd like him replaced with more pace as he was the only one of the three who actually has it (well Jozy does but he must be the slowest in the league over 5 meters which is no good). Campbell would have been a decent squad player but nothing more, certainly not a Connor replacement for me like.
I'm honestly not fussed on this, if he stays great, if he goes, well, he had 6 good games in 3 years, I won't be too cut up about it. Seems we've made a move for Abel Hernandez, a lightning quick striker with a bit of skill and guile, very different is style to Connor but maybe more suited to Gus way of thinking. Tribunal fee for Wickham would be £5-6million, about what we'd get to sell him now, so I dunno why there's any real concern. He could revert to type and be a plank all season then be worth **** all. Fletcher will always outscore Wickham when fit, and looks like he is at last.
