Which seems strange that they are willing to loan him to us with an option to buy?

    Some opinions from Spain:

"Manquillo is one of the most promising young footballers in the country. He’s offers muscle and has the sufficient quality both technically and tactically to face bigger challenges. He’s effective in defence and quick in the attack. He needs more competitive games to improve tactically, and adapt to the demands of reading between the lines involved in the game."
    – Miguel Angel Montoya in Perarnau Magazine

"Many compare him to FC Barcelona’s Dani Alves because his style of play is similar. Both play on the right, both contribute a lot in attack. Javier is also noteworthy in his muscle, leap and speed, his quickness in anticipating opponents. His great crosses are notable, too. Despite his attacking strength, he doesn’t neglect the defence, dropping back to cover the space he has left behind him. He’s good in duels and in aerial play."
    – Spanglish Football blog on Manquillo

"Physically strong, quick and resilient, Manquillo has the engine for getting up and down the pitch. In the club they think his progression will be subject to the challenge faced by many full backs: knowing when to push up and surprise opponents by finishing a move with a cross, or when to hold his position. He has a fondness of contributing excessively in attack, a common defect among novice full backs that think they are going to be judged more in how they attack than how they defend."
    – Ladislao J. Moñino writing in El Pais

"Manquillo is a tremendous footballer. He’s a full back of a great level. He’ll certainly end up in the Spanish national team. I joke with him that I hope he doesn’t change to left back!"
–New Chelsea defender Filipe Luis on his former team-mate

Javier Manquillo & Alberto Moreno are set to become Liverpool's 7th and 8th summer signings respectively, taking spending over £100m.

Looks like these will go through.

Quite a few sources are saying we're close.

Have heard that the deal will be complicated. Involving a buy back clause for Atletico if we do sign him at the end of the loan deal.

    I know that he's Manquillo
    Make you work hard
    Make you sweat hard
Make you want all of his love

Hopefully we won't wish we'd never ever met him at all.

Screw it, let's just buy Nelly Furtado. She can partner Peter Gabriel upfront.

Telegraph said Liverpool were hopeful of the option; doesn't mean we'll have it.

If we don't have the option, what's the point in loaning a 20 year old who has potential but won't be a certain starter... loan him for a year, he plays 15 games here then goes back to Atletico.

All seems very odd to me.

So he's another attacking full-back who's not so hot at defending then? How many competitive games are we expecting him to have given that we've got Johnson, Flanno and Kelly. Something's got to give, surely?

Maybe there's a deal principally in place for Johnson and/or Kelly already, and we're waiting to tie these deals up before letting them go (ala Agger)?

Agreed. Without the option, not really sure what the point is for us.

The thinking at Atletico seems to be that he's not good enough to be first choice for them, but that he's good enough to become a starter for us. The option to buy is the sweetener for Liverpool. But if he develops as much as Atletico hope he will they can activate his buy back clause within 2 years of him signing as long as they're still in the Champions League. The buy back fee for Atletico may have been the sticking point in the negotiations last week.

So we're hoping that a) Atletico fall out the champions league, b) he becomes good enough to be useful to us, but not good enough for Atletico to want to buy him, or c) his buy-back clause is massive. Still seems strange.

If he's being loaned to us... Atletico wont have a buy back, it'll just be a standard recall surely? In which case, no money will be involved as he's still their player?

Agree it's weird, but maybe the scouting team think he's good enough to come and do a job for us and potentially make us a profit in 3-4 years time.

I think it must be a clause involved in the potential transfer should we agree to sign him after the loan.

If we loan him, sign him for 6m euros then sell him back for presumably larger buy back fee at later date.

Well I'm no expert but the times I've seen him play all he want's to do is attack and has looked positionally terrible when coming back to defend.

I'm all up for full backs that like to attack, as long as they can do their primary job just as well - Defend!

Meh when the dust settles let actually look at them in red and decide. You only need a game or two to see if a guy has a brain and the drive for it... If he looks like he knows where to stand and has the power to get about and compete he's got a chance
