Sunderland are closing in on Lazio right-back Luis Pedro Cavanda, who does not fit into the plans of new coach Stefano Pioli.

The 23-year-old Belgian has been targeted by Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, who is keen to take him to the Stadium of Light this summer.

According to Sky Italia, the Black Cats are now close to reaching an agreement with Lazio which would see the former Standard Liege youth product head to England.

Cavanda was snapped up by Lazio from Standard Liege in 2007 and made his senior team breakthrough in Italy in 2009 in the Europa League.

The defender has had loan spells with both Torino and Bari, and clocked up 19 appearances in Serie A for Lazio last term.

Cavanda was also deployed in the Europa League, appearing seven times in Lazio's continental campaign.

The Belgian's contract in the Italian capital is due to run until 2018.

Sunderland are in talks with Lazio over Belgium defender Luis Pedro Cavanda.
The 23-year-old is a versatile full back who is predominantly right-sided but can also fill in on the left.
Sunderland have struggled to reach an agreement with Marcos Alonso of Fiorentina over personal terms.
Cavanda has had loan spells with Torino and Bari while Hamburg also have an interest.
Sunderland are also talking with Crewe about a deal for trialist Max Clayton.
The Black Cats have signed Dutch international Patrick Van Aanholt on a four-year deal from Chelsea.
The 23-year-old, who has played eight times for Chelsea, has had loan spells at Vitesse Arnhem, Wigan, Leicester, Newcastle and Coventry.
Gus Poyet has also expressed an interest in AIK's highly-rated Sweden winger Nabil Bahoui, although he faces competition from Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace
The 23-year-old has started the new Allsvenskan season well with six goals in 13 appearances.

SANTIAGO VERGINI is expected to be the next arrival at the Stadium of Light, as Sunderland close in on re-signing the Argentine defender.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has set a target of landing four players over the next six days to bolster a squad whose threadbare options have been highlighted throughout the pre-season campaign.

The Black Cats remain on the trail of Fabio Borini, although Poyet said here in Portugal last night that there was no further progress with the £14million pursuit of the Liverpool frontman.

But Sunderland are understood to be hopeful of completing a permanent deal for Atletico Fenix centre-half Vergini after he enjoyed a successful loan spell at the Stadium of Light during the second half of last season.

“We know Santi well and he was always one of the first choices,” said Poyet.

“It was him, Marcos (Alonso) and Fabio (Borini) – all on loan last season – who have been close.

“When you know a player well, you know what he is going to add to the group.”

While Vergini is firmly on Sunderland’s radar, several players linked with the Black Cats over the last 24 hours can be ruled out.

Chelsea winger Christian Atsu was reported to be a loan target for Sunderland yesterday, yet it is not thought that the Black Cats will be signing the Ghana international.

Neither is Norwich midfielder Alex Tettey on Sunderland’s wish-list.

Lazio full-back Luis Pedro Cavanda, who was a target last summer during ex-director of football Roberto De Fanti’s shopping spree, has again been linked with the Black Cats, along with Hamburg and West Ham.

Poyet confirmed that Sunderland have been offered the services of Cavanda, but he is not a player that the club are actively pursuing, although they are on the look-out for a versatile full-back.

“After I heard the name yesterday morning I watched a few games of him (on DVD),” added Poyet.

“The first time I have seen him properly was yesterday.”

Meanwhile, Sunderland are thought to have ended their interest in Max Clayton, with the out-of-contract Crewe striker joining Wolves on trial.

Clayton spent the first three weeks of pre-season training with the Black Cats and featured in the friendlies against Darlington 1883 and Hartlepool.

But after speaking with Clayton’s agent and Crewe – who were looking for an initial £500,000 payment for the 19-year-old, plus a further £500,000 in add-ons – Sunderland are not expected to pursue the frontman any further.

Clayton has now joined Wolves on trial, as he attempts to win a contract with the newly-promoted Championship outfit.

Like the magic roundabout this one.

REAL BETIS have re-entered into talks with Sunderland over the potential purchase of Alfred N’Diaye.

The Spanish side have been keen to re-sign N’Diaye throughout the summer after he spent the second half of last season at the club who finished bottom of La Liga’s Primera Division.

Betis were reported to have made a £1.5million offer for N’Diaye earlier this month, yet the Senegal international has remained on Wearside.

But the Echo understands that there have been fresh talks between the two clubs this week.

At this stage, Betis have not made a formal offer for N’Diaye, yet they are making enquiries into what fee Sunderland would accept for the 24-year-old and how the deal could be structured.

Betis’s proposal is to make a down-payment for N’Diaye, followed by a subsequent fee if they earn promotion back to the Primera Division.

N'Diaye should be kept,we are short of players, for me he has performed ok when he did play for us,we need a bit of muscle in central midfield and he fits the bill.

Celtic star Anthony Stokes is being targeted by a number of English clubs after dropping down the pecking order under Ronny Deila, Goal can reveal.

The 26-year-old joined Celtic from Hibernian in 2010 and has emerged as a firm favourite ever since, netting 68 goals in 154 appearances.

Stokes was handed a new long-term contract last year by Neil Lennon, but Stokes now looks set to follow the former manager out of Celtic Park.

Stokes was an unused substitute as Celtic crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Legia Warsaw to leave their hopes of reaching the Champions League group stages in tatters.

Goal understands both Premier League and Championship clubs have been alerted to the fact that Delia does not see Stokes as key to his plans and the player is not expected to agree to a less-prominent role.

A Celtic source told Goal: "Clearly Anthony won't be happy, and it won't be a shock if he is lured back to England."

Former club Sunderland, along with QPR, West Brom, Aston Villa, West Ham, Derby, Fulham and Norwich City are all understood to be amongst the clubs assessing Stokes's situation.

Last month's market, an important month for the Palermo striker Abel Hernandez. In recent days there has been a mission to England by the agent of Hernandez, to assess potential market opportunities. The attacker rosanero like to Sunderland, there have been contacts, is a possibility. Poyet carefully evaluate the profile of Hernandez, possible developments in the coming weeks. And in the background there could be Southampton, who after taking the Italian Pellè could fish for wild South American in Italy. Negotiations and situations yet to be developed, because the attacker's card Palermo is divided between the company Zamparini and Penarol. Abel Hernandez, England called
