In this country's interminable decline into poverty we should not be spending this amount of money on a "nice to have". I find it abhoerrent that we cannot look after our own citizens yet just because Seb Coe (utter prick in my opinion, always preferred Steve Ovett) is well thought of we may as well get ourselves further into debt and not recoup the expenditure. Which we won't just like China. Disgraceful.

Ironically it will be the olympics (which the labour gov,t worked so hard to get) that will help the incumbent con/dem coalition as any negative press gets hidden in the feelgood factor and media distraction of the olympics

Yes, I'm already sick to death of the Olympics and I normally love them, there's just too much coverage and ATM, it's coverage of bugger all, I just wish the BBC (and other media) would leave it alone until a week or two before it starts. But, Lightfoot, I have to corect you a bit about our economy, Britain may be in a hole, but Germany aside we're in a far more comfortable position than any other nation in Europe and the cost of fuel over here is now a lot less than most of Europe, it's 1 Euro 90 per litre in Greece ATM and not far off that throughout the rest of the Eurozone, all that apart, I agree with your sentiment.
The other thing is that at the time the bid was put in we didn't have the banking collapse and the whole world suddenly going into meltdown.
The Olympics is ****. 90% of the events nobody gives a flying **** about usually, but just because it's the Olympics people will sit there and watch any old rubbish.
I'm annoyed purely on the basis I didn't have the cash to get a ticket for any of the fencing rounds. I would have loved to have seen the finals.
The Olympics are a complete waste of money. The ticket prices are a ****ing joke. Who actually wants to watch equestrian, fencing and taekwondo?!
