Rooney does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Beckham.

Agree with you there. Beckham is a legend, didn't really appreciate him at the time though. If only we knew how **** England could actually be?

Remember this thought if you feel the need to have a pop at a current player

There's a subreddit called /r/100yearsago where people post news, photos, etc. of things which happened on this date, 100 years ago. Subscribing to it now is like watching WW1 unfold in realtime. Pretty cool.

There was an interesting article in the Daily Mail the other day, they had reproduced the daily mail newspaper from the day war broke out, even including the adverts from the time. It was very interesting.

Talking of which, there was a report on ITV a few minutes ago about a historian saying that the Somme was (in his words) worth it, because it acted as a turning point in military tactics and the British soldiers weren't lions led by donkeys.

    However, two points:

One) Even if the Somme led to a change in tactics, it can't be seen as being remotely worth anything because World War One directly led to World War Two.

Secondly) Even if the Somme did act as a turning point in tactics, the war had been going for two years by this point and there had been tens of thousands of causalities, yet it was only only then had the leadership decided to try something different? I'm sorry, but that sounds like lions led by donkeys to me.

As far as I'm concerned, Douglas Haig et al have the blood of a generation on their hands, whatever any Haig apologists may say.

This is what I was thinking. I can't even imagine what the England team will look like in 8 years time, but I have a feeling we'll be crying out for someone of Rooney's calibre.
