I've just made the mistake of updating myself of current events on the BBC News website. The whole thing is full of such awful stuff. If it's not the Ukraine and the aftermath of the downed Malaysian aircraft, it's the appalling tragedy unfolding in Syria. Look elsewhere and it's boyfriend's killing babies with their shoes, vets ****ing animals and rugby players assaulting their exes. There's even a road rage trucker who deliberately ran over the head of another motorist after apparently taking exception to it being pointed out that using a mobile phone whilst driving is illegal. Tomorrow there will be yet further tales of despair, violence and horror. Please could somebody fill this thread with some good news; stuff that restores one's faith in human nature, warms the heart and lifts the spirits. To make matters worse I've been watching the box set of 'Ray Donovan' series one - now that's one laugh-a-minute show, isn't it not!

I'm pondering Ubes, may take me some time..........I am reading a book called 'The Savage Continent' about Europe in the aftermath of World War 2 at the moment. Brutal anarchy, much of which I was unaware of, and not calculated to strengthen one's faith in human nature. Fascinating stuff though. Did you know that there were 180,000 homeless kids who had lost their families in Rome, Napoli and Milan alone in 1946? Sorry, the reverse of what you asked for....

Uber, to give you hope, everyday I stop outside a list of names on a wall. On the wall are the names of those awarded the title of righteous. Why?...because those men and women stood against the Nazi regime and took Jewish families into their homes to protect them and hide them during the Second World War. Well Yes because there are some wonderful stories coming out of the games regarding some of the smaller nations taking part......the true corinthian spirit. This one is about a female boxer from Kiribati in the Pacific Islands, a range of Islands that may disappear in 30 years time due to rising sea levels. You never said a truer word, Uber. In particular, the butchery taking place in Syria and Iraq by the Islamic Front (formerly ISIS) is starting to be compared to Cambodia in the 1970's and the Khmer Rouge. I'd hoped we'd left all that behind. With the football season almost on us, one bit of good news for me is the terrific atmosphere created by the fans at matches. In particular, youngsters of both sexes mix and mingle with fans of opposing teams in safety and in a (broad!) spirit of fraternity - there for the competition and the sport. In my day, opposing fans spent much of the time trying to kick lumps out of each other. That is progress.

This is great stuff, St. Roller. I get across to Norway quite often (more recently Bergen and Os, but previously Stavanger and a little of Oslo) and generally find Norwegians to be far more courteous and respectful of others than many from other nations. Perhaps it's in their DNA, or perhaps it's because they're a notch more content with themselves through oil revenues, great scenery, beautiful ladies and space. Whatever it is we could do with a little more over here.

I see the US doctors treating the inflicted in Liberia (where I spent my formative years, so have a lot of affection for the country) have now also contracted the virus.
