Now that this deadly disease (90% mortality rate?) has reached Hull's twinned city of Freetown, Sierra Leone, I ask a question......

Does anyone know if Ebola can spread as a pandemic (unlike Malaria, which needs the right mosquito as a vector and may reach us as a result of Global Warming)?

Stanners, you've been a little uppity in your use of language since you sautéed those mushrooms you found in the woods...

Have you thought of changing your handle to 'norman neanderthal'?

International health bodies - e.g. the WHO - are extremely worried.

But you - in your expert knowledge - mock the world's fears.....

The world's fears? This is just like the sandstorm from the Sahara Desert, I don't think many people in the West are worried.

There is no cure for Ebola, has a 90% mortality rate and sounds a horrendous way to die. Its symptoms present as flu with an incubation of 21 days and by then it is too late. Sounds like the WHO need to be a bit scared.

Not really, their live gigs still attract large crowds and the royalties generated from their back catalogue are massive.

Ban all flights for the time being, it isn't airborne so all we have to do is prevent people coming to Europe from West Africa.

Perhaps my post was a little too subtle for you. Whilst the ebola outbreak is undoubtedly serious, panic inducing and irresponsible journalism does nothing but spread fear and cause populations to act irrationally. In recent years we have seen H1N1/bird flu/SARS, mad cow disease/CJD, TB, Smallpox and just recently Bubonic Plague. The media has blown these incidents up into catastrophic, civilisation ending diseases. And yet here we still are. In a nutshell, I wasn't making light of the outbreak, merely implying that the Daily Mails reporting of it was substandard.

And on the subject of the World Health Organisation, they are merely poor relations to America's CDC who have a plan in place for everything!!!

(That last bit of the post was tongue in cheek for those of you who didn't recognise it)
