Almost 200 people being killed each year in a place the size of Yorkshire so they write a new "charter" <doh> FFS this is a massacre needing United Nations sanctions and military intervention by civilised countries

BTW the charter says **** all except that they might actually start paying attention to the pathetically weak employment laws that already exist, and the system of forced imprisonment will remain in place

Money talks Astro <ok> What do the bung merchants at FIFA care for a couple of hundred lowly construction workers when billions in brown envelopes are flying about?

Another poor fella died at the Manaus stadium the other day.....hardly even caused a ripple on the news this time. That's 6 that have died on the Brazilian stadiums alone.

    Middle East. <sigh>

My older brother works in the construction industry, in Health and Safety. He's going to live in Qatar for a second time with his family. This sort of crap is going to give him a f*cking heart attack! He's not the calmest person at the best of times. Even JC can't calm him down, and he subscribes to that crap! <doh>

Qatar workers' salaries are just 50p a day and they can't even be ****ed to actually pay them for over a year

$4.5 billion from the Brazil World Cup kept for a rainy day though. Can never be too careful.

the russian and qatar world cups are a scandal of such huge proportaions that the whole house of cards will come down if fifa actually do anything.

even if blatter resigned the rest are all dirty and can't retrospectively change anything.

I firmly believe all right thinking countries should boycott both world cups.

    never happen sadly.

hypothetically speaking, if say quite a few countries did that, you would get one of the major players who had the potential to win it go just because they can say they are world champions, irrelevant they didn't have much comp.

nothing comes down to morals anymore, all about the money.

if all of European teams boycoted it for example, they would still go ahead, as they would lose too much money, and probably have to give back the brown envelops, and they would probably try and twist it saying all European countries were sour grapes or some bollocks.

bascially if every european side were BANNED from travelling to russia due to widespread civil war they created oh and shooting down dutch/malaysian airliners.. well do you think fifa would be happy their prime audience for the games would be gone.

i don't see the US market being all that hot given the games will be during work and in some parts of asia games will be really really late. If europe goes the tournaments in russia and qatar are very unattractive due to time zone for tv.

There are all sorts of laws that could improve safety... for example, speed limits reduced to 35mph everywhere- and an obscene police presence... that would save lives- but cost the economy dearly.

Factories, Mines, etc... there are always balances... how safe do we make this- vs how much profit do we want. Government's and business could make life squeaky clean and safe for denizens... at an obscene cost.

The recent choices for hosts of WC's has proved that money counts. Russia, Brazil and Qatar all picked despite massive failings internally all because they have massive emerging economies and so that Blatter can claim he's taking Football to new places (aside from Brazil, but including South Africa). Swear he wants a Nobel Peace prize for 'Healing the world with Football'.

exactly, profit is king, or taxes as the government would benefit from. we all know what they could do, but they choose not to as they make billions profit out of not doing so and are not pressured to either the ****s.

Nothing was done when police found £1 million in cash in Jack Warner's office in Geneva that could not be accounted for. Since then Blatter has ensured that the corruption has become more widespread and more profitable!

    But nobody will do anything

That's a bad analagy. Many people would vote for the freedom of higher speed limits and take responsibility for safe driving themselves. No one would vote for their boss to have the freedom to not pay them and endanger their lives.

The Qatar situation is closer to the slave trade and labour camps than it is to any kind of risk assessment that we suffer/enjoy.

You live in America, don't you Mike? Isn't that the country that insists that waitresses' tips, whether actually earned or just assumed, are taken into account when calculating their minimum wage?

In China they have death quotas for construction projects and the mining industry, If you go over your quota you get a hefty government fine! This has lead to trading of Death quotas so if you go over your quota you can buy someone else's surplus!!! I guess you can't stop people dying!!

Some BBC report is saying that workers in Qatar are being paid 45p a day. Slave labour at its best / worst. The two countries to host the next two huge footballing competitions (Russia and Qatar) are not exactly the least corrupt of countries. Shocking that they're suggesting corruption in both cases. <whistle>
