We were able to deduce Osvaldo's salary after he was fined, weren't we? If I recall it wasn't all that high, and he's presumably a top earner.

That could have been his basic pay before bonuses. The bonuses could be crazy for all we know.

I have no doubt that Cortese will have offered high bonuses, as he was very into the idea of giving players lots of incentives to stick with the project. But enough to destabilise this club? No chance. It would have to be an unbelievable amount of money, and not something an experienced businessman would do.

Doesn't he come from banking and finance? Those aren't businessmen. They are gamblers.

You can't rule anything out tbh. The way things are going it is probably all true, Kat selling, Cortese offering crazy bonuses, etc etc. Not much has been wrong lately.

Don't know where Morgan was. It's South Western House where Osvaldo was and now Ronald. Your in ocean village I believe you said, so just across the road from you and I'm in behind South Western House, the other end of the car park. I nearly ran Osvaldo over once. Should have tried harder. ;)

Yeah but then we kinda know that he went against that and did spend money we didn't yet have, or whatever else.

And there were those two BVI loans.

We're so not a selling club that we are even selling players we don't own now. James should fetch us near enough another £100m...

That seems to fit all the known facts. I can believe that Nicola was getting reckless and the owner (and the financial guy who was leaving) was concerned. He had the chance to stay with more restraints. Clearing the decks for top dollar and resetting the wage bill sounds more likely than taking money before a sale. I can understand that it is sensible to get the club stable, whether selling or not, but extracting lots of cash by stripping out assets (players) before a sale makes no sense whatsoever and I'm certain as can be that that isn't happening.

Grateful to Nicola, but I find it easy to believe that he was a megalomaniac out of control.

Well a loan kind of is money we do have. It keeps cashflow under control. I think it just refers to the "money we'll have down the road when we qualify for Europe" mentality that Portsmouth had. I don't suspect he ever went that ******ed.

I'll take a megalomaniac out of control over a team of idiots out of control.

Don't think I'd take either. Will end up badly either way.

This does kind of fit? I'm sure I read somewhere the players, in particular Lallana received a bonus of £500,000 when we got promoted from the championship.

Ok, not necessarily 'a lot' of money in football terms, but if you take into account Lallana's salary at the time (£25,000?) and the fact that he was already at the club with personal ambitions of playing in the Prem, imagine the bonuses in place once we started signing players like Lovren, Wanyama etc. all on substantially bigger wages than Lallana's £25,000 a week in the championship. Added to the fact we signed them from champions league clubs, they would and could have commanded massive bonuses for achieiving top 4 finishes, trophies etc.

You could probably added in bonuses to people like Jay Rod's contracts for international recognition, goal targets etc. (Cortese last pre season, telling Jay Rod he would be our top scorer, and play for England).

You can imagine how the negotiations went. 'Jay if you sign for us, you will be top scorer in two seasons and play for england, hell were even give you £XXX amount of money for doing so we are that confident'. 'Lovren, if you sign for us and help us get into the champions league, you can have £XXX amount'

Long as OllySaint didn't help do Jay's goal bonus, he would probably have give him 50k per goal.(one goal)

If experienced businessman means a guy who has been running a football club for 5 years then this applies. I'm just saying the guy wasn't a businessman up until he helped acquired and became CEO of the group. His wife runs a cake shop or something like that. That's about all my knowledge of his business background extends to.

I'm not going to think or comment right now on whether he faithfully applied those principles but he talked a good game.

"Cortese was educated in Switzerland and England in business communication and finance.[2] He was involved for ten years in sports business practice as head of the sports and entertainment desk at various Swiss banks, providing global services to sports and entertainment professionals.[2] His most recent position was as an executive at Banque Heritage in Geneva where he managed the finances of billionaires. He had previously run the sports business desk for Credit Suisse."

That's business, mate. Lots of it. You can say it's gambling if you like, like some sort of semi-educated Channel 4 comedian might do, but nevertheless it's business.

I find it staggering that people are trying to blame Cortese for what is going on.

He obviously left in protest at the exact thing we are seeing. Some people are so blinded by their faith in Southampton FC that the club are immune from criticism.
