Sunderland midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini has admitted that he would like to play a bigger part for the club this season.

The Italy international started just 16 games for the Black Cats last term, which has led to speculation over his future.

However, the 29-year-old has said that he wants to remain at the Stadium of Light.

"I can get better this year. I have experienced the first year here and I saw the league, the players and the stadiums," he told The Chronicle.

"Last year is gone now. I scored five goals and five assists. I did not play every game, but when I did it was okay.

"I want to stay at Sunderland. If Sunderland do not want me, we will see, but my intention is to stay here."

Giaccherini joined Sunderland from Juventus in 2013.

    What most players miss nowadays

    A bit of class

The guy wants to stay and play and do well for the team

Not just expect his wages and get a game

Hope he gets some more game time and retires with us

I don't blame him. His talent should earn him a start, it's just unfortunate that he's in a particularly physical league and he can struggle with that.

I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in the coming season.

im well impressed with the way he has handled himself.

he didnt play a lot last year but he didnt once have a winge about it. all window there seems to have been some sort of speculation around him but every time he has come out and said im a sunderland player, i want to be here and i wont be leaving. not many players these days show his type of class considering there are probably some bigger teams out there would love to have him

Drops too deep then becomes embroiled in physical battles which he loses. He needs to stay further up the field where he can hurt the opposition with his genuine football talent

    Yes, agreed.

Absolutely beside myself he's staying this season. I just hope GP's system accommodates him, and allows him to fulfil his potential for us. At least, for one season!

Would like to see him in the hole behind striker. If we play a system that includes that role he could be very good

I am a big fan, he should play the same role for us as Cazorla plays for Arsenal or Coutinho for Liverpool or Silva for City. I am sure he could get 10 goal a season given the games. He is also creative. He could have a free role in midfield alongside Catts and Rodwell (if we signed him).

I have a feeling he will be quality this season.

Glad to see many on here echoing my sentiments about this lad.

I went on record at the end of the season that I genuinely believe Giacherinni will be our player of the season next campaign. Not only a class act on the pitch but a top class lad off it too. We could well get the best 2 or 3 seasons of his career now. He is the key to the door in that central creative midfield role for me.
