Havn't seen enough of him to really say much, I'll just trust Wenger's judgement on this one We definitely needed someone that can cover at CB if needed
That's the cb position covered now as long as the verminator doesn't leave. If he does we will need an extra cb, but otherwise that's the defence sorted. Bring on a dm!
Happy man. I think had Saints not been ravaged by Liverpool then they'd not have been too bothered either. We get a good promising young player and they get an inflated price for him with cover in Clyne and McGregor. Arsene has admitted it's pricey and that it's a gamble but unless you're Man City/PSG then you have to take these gambles or end up paying ridiculous figures. The obvious advantage too is that he's English so counts towards the HG tally, that's still a thing right?!
He played right midfield in the youth squad then went on to play as a right back for saints and you guys buy him as cover for a CB!!! you should play him in any of those three positions
Reading your main transfer thread, I think some of you are getting ahead of yourselves slightly when it comes to his ability to cover at CB. As far as I can recall, he never played at CB for our first team. Only ever the odd game at youth or reserve level. And even then, he played more at RM than CB at that level (I'm not an avid follower of our youth team, but I believe he started as a right winger, and we converted him into a RB). There were times last season where we had Yoshida or Hooiveld playing CB. Not Chambers. And the former two really are quite bad. For a club as big as you guys, with the levels of success which you'll be aiming to achieve, I'm not sure you'll want to be playing Chambers at CB too often. But you have yourselves a cracking young RB. If you keep his exposure to first team football open, he'll become England's RB for years to come before too long.
Yeah the CB idea is more of a theoretical thing because he has bulked out a bit in the last year, so I wouldn't consider him immediate CB cover but he could get there in the future.
For me this doesnt make sense for several reasons: - We have two RB (one older and one younger) so we dont need more. - If we sell Jenkison for the reported 3 million and buy Chambers for 16million then financially it is crazy - If Vermaelen go we still need another mature CB. Or did I wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?
And they said Arsenal don't sign English players. If it's any consolation to Southampton, I think we as Arsenal fans can really relate to their position of seeing their best players being sold, although we never had it this bad at one go, we still had it bad, losing Fabregas-Nasri in one season was a big kick to the nuts I remember.
They are West Ham of the early Naughties - they would have been great if they could keep that team together. Now Southampton are in a similar boat - but tbf they got a **** tonne of money to invest. Will be interesting to see how they go.
True, just not much time to spend it and give everyone a chance to gel. I quite like Saints so I hope they don't do a Spurs and wazz all their money away.
Interesting signing. He's certainly a TOP class prospect. £11-16 Million depending on which report you read - whichever its a lot of money for a player his age but I guess compared to the £30 Million United paid for Shaw it's a bargain. Be surprised if Jenkinson stays at the Club now(which I hope he does).
